Four Bearcats selected for Tazón de Estrellas

GRANBURY, Texas (Nov. 17) - Four Saint Vincent senior football players have been chosen to play for Team Stars & Stripes in the third annual Tazón de Estrellas (Bowl of the Stars), announced Global Football.

Representing Saint Vincent will be offensive lineman Taofik Amokomowo, linebackers Armando Fortunato and Anthony Johnson and quarterback Aaron Smetanka.

Amokomowo, a native of Severn, Md., and a graduate of Old Mill High School, was an All-Presidents' Athletic Conference selection this season after anchoring an offensive line that has cleared the way for 1,546 rushing yards and allowed just 19 sacks so far this year.

Fortunato, a Brockway High School graduate and native of Brockway, Pa., was also a All-PAC First-Team pick this season. The second leading tackler in program history, Fortunato has recorded 74 stops (47 solo), 6.5 tackles for loss, 4.0 sacks and an interception this season.

The all-time leading tackler in modern-day SVC history, Johnson, is a native of Fort Pierce, Fla., and a graduate of Fort Pierce-Westwood High School. Through 10 games this season, the All-PAC Second-Team selection has matched his single-season tackles record from 2010 with 102 tackles (61 solo). He has also added 13.0 TFL and 1.5 sacks.

A two-year starter after transferring to Saint Vincent, Smetanka is a native of Allison Park, Pa., and a graduate of North Catholic. He is the program's all-time leading passer and enters this weekend just 104 yards shy of 4,000 for his career. This season he is completing 61.3 percent (173-of-282) of his passes for 1,929 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Saint Vincent had the third most selections with four, trailing only Central College (Iowa) and Simpson College (Iowa) which both had five selections.

The game is set to take place on Saturday, Dec. 17 at the 5,000-seat El Tempo del Dolor (The Temple of Pain) in Puebla, Mexico, approximately 80 miles southeast of Mexico City. Team Stars & Stripes will play the CONADIEP All-Stars from Mexico.

A total of 49 players from 27 NCAA Division III colleges were selected from more than 200 nominations by head coaches across the country.

Originally named the Aztec Bowl, the game has been played for 14 years with the American team drawn from Division III all-stars and their counterparts selected from the CONADEIP national conference of private schools in Mexico.

The 2011 edition of Team Stars & Stripes will arrive in Puebla on Sunday, Dec. 11 and after two-a-day practices on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, will have an opportunity to mix lighter practices with an opportunity to explore the local region.

Last year Team Stars and Stripes triumphed 48-7 in Toluca, having suffered a 24-12 loss to the Tec Monterrey All-Stars in the first Tazón de Estrellas in 2009.
