Mejia earns All-America honors at NCAA Nationals

WINNECONNE, Wisc. (Nov. 19) - Saint Vincent senior Ivette Mejia broke the school record in the 6K run with a time of 21:37 to finish 29th in a field of 277 and earn All-America status at the 2011 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships at the Lake Breeze Golf Club.

Washington University (Mo.) claimed team honors behind four top-15 runners. Individually, the race was won by Williams (Mass.) sophomore Chiara Del Piccolo who posted a time of 20:52.

The two-time defending Presidents' Athletic Conference champion, Mejia became the first Bearcat to earn All-America status at an NCAA Championship with her finish. In the one-mile split, she was in seventh place, after two miles, she was in 14th and was in 19th-place after three miles before finishing 29th overall.

This season, the New York, N.Y. native became just the 14th SVC women's cross country runner to qualify for the national championships and the first since former stand-out Sarah Johnston qualified for the NAIA meet in 2004.
