The Saint Vincent men's tennis team completed 2011 Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships in second place, with two individuals and two doubles teams taking second place at the Pennbriar Athletic Club in Erie, PA.
In singles play,
Nathan Walch won two matches on the opening day of the event at the number-two spot, while
Sean Malone did the same in the three-spot, but fell in Saturday afternoon's finals. Both players also in the doubles' finals, with Malone and
Dan Chirdon advancing in the number-one doubles spot and Walch and
Tyler Camaione doing so in number-two doubles. Both teams dropped their Saturday afternoon Championship matches, settling for runners-up honors.
In singles on Friday, Walch took his opening match of the day by a 6-3, 6-1 count over Bethany's James Peterson, before taking his second round match 6-0, 6-0 over Derek Fredrickson of Westminster. Walch then lost to Grove City's Caleb Fuller in Saturday's championship tilt in three sets. After winning the first set 6-2, Walch fell in the second set, 6-2, then lost the third set by a 6-4 tally.
Malone lost to Grove City's Anthony Rosselli in straight sets in the finals after defeating Thiel's Matt Hadden 6-3, 6-1 in the first round, and Drew Trifelos of Westminster 6-2, 6-4 in the second round.
Camaione won his opening round match 6-3, 6-4 in the number-four spot over Thiel's Sean Black, before falling in the second round 1-6, 1-6. He then came back to fall in three sets Saturday's third place match against Derek Malolo of Bethany, . In number-five singles, Sean Lehman won the third place match on Saturday over Ryan Rokisky of Bethany in straight sets (6-1, 6-4) after winning his opening match 6-4, 7-6 and falling 6-2, 0-6, 1-6 in a marathon second-round match.
In doubles play, Malone and Chirdon won 8-2 in the first round over Thiel, before defeating Thomas More 8-2 in the second round. Camaione and Walch advance to the finals after blanking their first round opponents from Washington & Jefferson 8-0, and then edging Waynesburg 8-6. In the Championships, Malone and Chirdon fell to their rivals from Grove City, 8-5, while Camaione and Walch dropped an 8-2 decision to their counterparts from GCC.
The Bearcats' number-three doubles tandem of Lehman and Nicholas Latterner dropped their third-place match on Saturday, 8-4 to a tandem from Waynesburg, after winning their opener 8-3 over Thiel and falling 8-2 to Grove City in the second round.
Grove City, which has won 21 consecutive PAC championships, won the 2011 team title, capturing individual titles in all six singles positions as well as all three doubles spots. GCC posted a team score of 54, followed by Saint Vincent (27), Westminster (18), Bethany & Waynesburg (16 points each), Thomas More (6), Thiel (2) and Washington & Jefferson (0).
