Burkardt, Cenkner and Cline honored by PAC



GREENVILLE, Pa. (April 15) - Saint Vincent athletes Brad Burkardt (baseball), Dave Cenkner (men's tennis) and Sam Cline (men's golf) have been named the Presidents' Athletic Conference Players of the Week in their respective sports.

Burkardt, a native of Latrobe, Pa., and a graduate of Greater Latrobe High School earned the award after becoming the Saint Vincent all-time leader in hits with an infield single against Penn State-Altoona. His record-setting 184th hit came during a week that the senior shortstop went 9-of-16 (.563) with two hit by pitches, a walk, four doubles, four runs scored, two RBI and two stolen bases.

Against Geneva on Wednesday, Burkardt went 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored. In Thursday's matchup with crosstown rival Pitt-Greensburg the following day he tied the Bearcat hits record with a 2-for-3 showing, including two hit by pitches and an RBI. He broke the school mark at Penn State-Altoona, going 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored. On Sunday against La Roche the senior had a 1-for-4 day with a walk, a double, a run scored and two stolen bases.

For his career, Burkardt currently has at 188 hits, five more than former two-time NAIA All-American Danny Consuegra (2003-06) who previously held the record.

Cenkner, a Mt. Pleasant High School graduate and native of Acme, Pa., went 6-0 last week as the Bearcats finished the PAC slate 7-0 and clinched the first regular-season conference title in program history.

Against Penn State-Altoona, Cenkner won 6-1, 6-1 at first singles and 8-1 at first doubles. He earned a number one singles win against PAC foe Waynesburg by identical 6-1 scores and added an 8-4 first doubles win against the Yellow Jackets. At W&J to close out the conference schedule, he posted a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 1 singles position and an 8-1 win at first doubles.

Cline, the reigning PAC Men's Golfer of the Year, took second place at the two-day Edward Jones Shootout hosted by Carnegie Mellon at the par-70 Links at Spring Church. The Latrobe, Pa., native and Greater Latrobe High School graduate helped the Bearcats to a third-place finish out of seven teams after shooting a 71 on the second day to follow up his first-round score of 75. The junior finished just one stroke off the lead at the event.

For Burkardt and Cline it was the first honor of the year, while Cenkner was recognized for the second time during his freshman campaign.
