The Saint Vincent Athletic Department announces that for the first time in nearly 50 years, the SVC men's basketball team will host a NCAA Division I opponent for an on-campus game.
On Monday, October 30, Robert Morris University will play Saint Vincent in an exhibition contest. Tipoff will be at 7PM.
The Bearcats have played at Robert Morris twice in recent years, and the opportunity came about this year for the game to be played in Latrobe, as the Sewell Center is undergoing renovations. "It was the perfect fit for them to come out to our place," said SVC head coach DP Harris. "I've worked with (RMU Coach) Andrew Toole quite a bit with the Coaches Vs Cancer program, and our former Associate Head Coach, Mike Iuzzolino, is now an assistant at Robert Morris. That's how it all came together."
"We're excited about playing Saint Vincent in an exhibition game at the Carey Center," Toole said. "With a young core making up the majority of our 2017-18 roster, playing on the road for our first competition this season will be a good challenge for our student-athletes."
Harris is equally excited about the game, and having the Division I school come to Latrobe. "I don't believe there's been a Division I team here since the Dodo Canterna era," said Harris, referring to the late Bearcat coach and Latrobe native, who will be honored with an on-campus memorial dedication on October 1. "This is a great way to kick off our basketball season, and it's a win-win for both schools, as both have a strong alumni base in Westmoreland County. It's going to be a great opportunity for local residents to come out and see some quality basketball."
Admission to the Saint Vincent/Robert Morris game will be free.
