Bryan Butler was named head coach of the Saint Vincent women's soccer program in January 2022.
A graduate of fellow Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) member Geneva College, Butler arrives at Saint Vincent with a wealth of NCAA Division-III women's soccer coaching experience.
In his second season at the helm of the Bearcats, Butler guided his squad to its best season in more than a decade. The 2023 Bearcats finished 10-4-4 overall and 6-2-2 in the PAC. The team earned its first appearance in the PAC Championship Tournament in 10 seasons, earning the No. 3 seed and hosting a conference playoff game for the first time in program history. Butler was named the PAC Coach of the Year, while a team-record seven players earned All-PAC accolades. The Bearcats led the PAC in defense, posting nine shutouts and surrendering just 0.67 goals per game. Sophomore defender Olivia Toomey, a first team All-PAC honoree, was also named first team All-ECAC, while senior midfielder Tanisha Grewal was named to the USC Scholar All-Region Team and earned Academic All-District accolades from the College Sports Communicators. Grewal and freshman Emma Koller, who tied a program record with four goals in an October draw with Waynesburg, each scored 25 points to tie for sixth in the PAC in scoring, while junior goalkeeper Madison Arnold led the PAC with 107 saves, ranked second in the league with a .715 goals-against average.
In 2022, his first season with the Bearcats, his squad finished 6-7-3 overall. The six victories marked the team's most since 2015. Grewal ranked in the top-10 in the PAC in both goals (9) and points (20), while Arnold placed third in the conference in goals-against average (1.31) and fifth in save percentage (.776). In addition to earning All-PAC laurels, Grewal was one of four teammates named CSC Academic All-District, joining Arnold, senior midfielder Jessica Persin and sophomore defender Kayla West. Butler earned his first win as head coach in the Bearcats' 3-0 season-opening victory over Wilson on Sept. 2, while his first PAC victory came against his alma mater, Geneva College, by a 2-1 score on Oct. 2.
Butler spent the 2020 and 2021 seasons as the top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Montclair State University (N.J.). He assisted in all aspects of the program, including practice and game planning and preparing scouting reports and film analysis. Butler was actively engaged in all fundraising along with camps and ID clinics. He also handled all recruiting efforts for the program, from identifying and scouting prospective student-athletes to arranging visits and campus tours.
During his two seasons on the sidelines at Montclair, the Red Hawks went a combined 17-5-2. In the COVID-abbreviated 2021 spring season, the squad went 5-0-2 and captured the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) championship. In the 2021 fall campaign, they finished 12-5 overall and 7-2 in conference play to place second in the perennially strong NJAC. The Red Hawks were ranked #3 in the Division-III Region IV rankings during the 2021 season, while seven players earned All-NJAC honors.
Prior to his time in New Jersey, Butler served as the top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the women's soccer program at DeSales University from May 2016 through July 2020. He headed the team's recruitment efforts and was responsible for assisting in all day-to-day operations of the program both on and off the field.
Butler helped lead the Bulldogs to the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) playoffs in each of his four seasons with the programs, including a pair of trips to the MAC championship finals. The team went a combined 41-30-4 overall, and 18-9-1 in conference play, over the four-year span.
Butler began his coaching career at his alma mater, Geneva College, serving as an assistant coach for the men's soccer program during the 2015-16 season. He assisted in all day-to-day operations of the program and was heavily involved in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes. The Golden Tornadoes went 13-5-1 during the 2015 campaign and advanced to the PAC title game, while also earning a bid to the ECAC Division-III Championship Tournament.
Butler enjoyed a stellar playing career for the Golden Tornadoes from 2011-14. A four-year starter at goalkeeper, he was a four-time All-PAC honoree, a two-time All-Region selection and was named All-America by the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA). He ranks second in Geneva program history for career shutouts (23) and posted a 1.12 goals-against average in 76 career games played.
After concluding his playing career at Geneva, Butler spent one season playing for the Washington, D.C.-based Evergreen Diplomats of the professional American Soccer League, helping lead the team to the playoffs in 2015.
