The Lady Bearcat soccer team scored a dramatic 1-0, double-overtime victory at Geneva College.
Sophomore
Catherine Czapski scored her second game-winning goal of the year for the Lady Bearcats two minutes into the second overtime period, as the team remains unbeaten in overtime contests, with a 1-0-3 record.
Lady Bearcat goalie
Kirstie Mills went the distance in goal, making seven saves to earn the shutout victory.
Mills kept SVC in the game early, making five stops in the first half, as the Golden Tornadoes enjoyed a 7-4 advantage in the opening 45 minutes. The game evened out in the second half, with each team posting seven shots, but neither squad was able to find the net, as Mills ended the regulation with six saves, and Geneva goalie Lauren Londido five.
The Lady Bearcats then looked to take control in overtime. In the first extra session, SVC out-shot the Golden Tornadoes 4-1, and forced Londido to make a trio of close range saves to keep the scoreless tie. In the opening minute of the second overtime, a Geneva shot went wide, and the Lady Bearcats quickly advanced the ball upfield, with Czapski scoring the game-winner with 7:12 left to play.
The victory improves SVC's record to 5-10-3 on the season, while Geneva falls to 10-7-3. It was the second time in as many seasons in which the Lady Bearcats used late heroics to defeat the Golden Tornadoes, as
Leanna Seminsky scored a goal with 18 seconds left in the second half in last year's matchup with Geneva to give SVC a 3-2 victory.
The Lady Bearcats will return to action on Wednesday afternoon, closing out the 2010 season with a home game against Pitt-Johnstown on the Saint Vincent Turf. The game was originally scheduled for Sept. 22nd in Johnstown, but was canceled due to severe thunderstorms.
