Women's soccer edged in opener

Box Score

The Saint Vincent women's soccer team was edged in its season opener 3-2 by Oberlin College.

The Bearcats enjoyed a 2-1 lead with less than 30 minutes left in regulation, but saw the host Yeowomen score two goals in a five-minute span to earn the win.

The game was scoreless for the duration of the first half, but Oberlin had the better of play, out-shooting SVC 13-4 over the first 45 minutes.  Bearcat goalie Kirstie Mills stopped the first five Oberlin shots on goal, until the Yeowomen got on the board with just over seven minutes left in the opening frame, when Ryann McChesney cashed in on a free kick from 30 yards out.

The hosts would maintain the one-goal lead into the early portions of the second half, but the Bearcats upped their offensive pressure, tying the game in the 60th minute when Carly Duffy put home a rebound off of an Elyse Togliatti blast.

Saint Vincent would keep the momentum, and took the lead four minutes later on a goal from Abbey Neish, assisted by Rebecca Sandor to make the score 2-1 with 25:20 left to play.

Oberlin quickly stormed back, tying the game with 22:30 left on a goal from Lori Salko, and just 55 seconds later, Charlotte Istel put the hosts in front 3-2 on a goal assisted by McChesney.

The Bearcats were unable to mount a comeback, as Oberlin maintained possession for the remaining 20 minutes of play to ice the home win.

For the game, Oberlin out-shot SVC 22-11, with Mills ending the day with eight saves in defeat.

Saint Vincent (0-1) will return to action on Sunday afternoon, hosting Pitt-Greensburg at 1pm for the Bearcats' home opener on the SVC Turf.
