The Saint Vincent women's soccer team opened the 2012 season with a 1-0 victory over visiting Oberlin College.
The Bearcats were dominant from the start, controlling play from the opening whistle. In the tenth minute,
Rebecca Sandor sent a shot from outside the box over the head of Oberlin's keeper and into the back corner of the net, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Saint Vincent then continued to control the game, not allowing a single Yeowomen shot until the 30th minute.
By halftime, Saint Vincent had tallied 7 shots compared to just one for the visitors.
In the second half, temperatures in the high 80s seem to take their toll on both defenses, as shots increased (12-5 advantage to SVC), but neither team was able to score, preserving the 1-0 victory for the hosts.
Cassie Overly went the distance in the net for Saint Vincent (1-0), recording three saves. Kate Frost made 9 saves for Oberlin but took the loss.
Sandor and
Jennifer Kisner each had three shots on goal for SVC, while
Monika Derboghossian tallied four shots, two on net.
For the game, Saint Vincent held a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.
SVC will return to action on Sunday, facing Carlow University on the road at 4PM.
