SVC posts third-straight 1-0 win; downs Bethany

BOX SCORE

LATROBE (Oct. 25) - The Saint Vincent women's soccer team posted its third-straight 1-0 win in Presidents' Athletic Conference action, downing Bethany on a frigid day at the SVC Turf.

With the win, the Bearcats improve to 9-6-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the PAC. SVC currently sits in fourth place in the conference, 0.5 games ahead of Waynesburg (3-2-1) and a full game ahead of W&J (3-3). Those two teams play tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 26 at 3:30 p.m. in Washington, Pa. Bethany falls to 3-13 on the year and 1-4 in the conference.

Sophomore Meghan Smith put SVC on the board in the 14th minute with an unassisted goal, her team-leading fifth of the season. She dribbled along the right side of the box and hit a ball just inside the right post that hit off of keeper Cheyann McQuain's hands and went in the goal.

McQuain left with an injury in the 30th minute and back-up Whitney Sparks played admirably in goal for the Bison, despite SVC using a strong offensive attack. The Bearcats recorded 30 shots in the contest, including 13 on goal. SVC out-shot Bethany by nine (14-5) in the first half and 13 (16-3) in the second half. Sparks (nine) and McQuain (three) combined for 12 saves.

Smith and senior Jennifer Kisner led SVC with six shots apiece. Senior Monika Derboghossian and sophomore Emily Johns each recorded five shots and junior Amie Dobracki posted four shots in the win.

Senior goalkeeper Cassie Overly tied the school record for shutouts in a season, notching her seventh of the year. She moves into a tie with former SVC keeper Jessica Urban who posted seven shutouts in 2007. Overly made three saves in 90 minutes to pick up her 13th career blanking.

SVC returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 29, traveling to conference co-leader Grove City for a 4 p.m. match.
