SVC clinches PAC Tournament berth; tops Waynesburg 1-0

BOX SCORE

LATROBE (Nov. 1) - The Saint Vincent women's soccer team clinched its first-ever appearance in the Presidents' Athletic Conference championship tournament with a 1-0 win over Waynesburg on the SVC Turf.

The win, SVC's sixth 1-0 victory of the year and fourth in the last five games, moves the Bearcats to 10-7-1 and 5-3-1 in the league. The Yellow Jackets finish the season with an 8-8-1 overall mark and an identical 5-3-1 record in conference play. The two teams entered the game as the last two teams vying for the conference's fourth seed. Had Waynesburg won or the two teams tied, the Jackets would have advanced to take on the league's top seed on Tuesday.

Junior Abbey Neish gave the Bearcats an early lead, scoring just 3:15 into the game off a cross from sophomore Meghan Smith. Thanks to a strong defensive team effort, including a pair of team saves by senior Lindsey Daniels and Elly Colvin, it proved to be all that SVC needed.

Saint Vincent senior goalkeeper Cassie Overly established a new single-season program record with her eighth shutout of the season, passing former Bearcat Jessica Urban who recorded seven shutouts in 2007. Overly now has 14 shutouts in her career after making six saves in 90 minutes on Friday.

For the game, Waynesburg out-shot SVC 18-9, including 12-4 in the first half. The Jackets also took six corner kicks to SVC's two. Senior Monika Derboghossian, Smith and sophomore Emily Johns led SVC with two shots each.

The Bearcats will now play at the winner of Saturday's Grove City-Thomas More match-up on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
