Bearcat offense strong in loss at Grove City

BOX SCORE

The Saint Vincent offense put up 26 points and tallied over 400 yards, but the team lost to Grove City on the road by a score of 36-26.

SVC was unable to overcome three turnovers and 11 penalties on the afternoon.

Two of those turnovers occurred on the Bearcats' first two drives, each proving to be costly.  A fumble on the first play from scrimmage led to a nine-play, 41-yard scoring drive.  On the first play following the kickoff, another Bearcat fumble was returned 30 yards for a touchdown, giving the hosts a quick 14-0 lead.

Grove City extended the lead to 21-0 early in the second quarter, but SVC quarterback Andy Borgen led the team on a 12-play, 75-yard drive that was highlighted by a 21-yard Borgen run, and capped by a 1-yard scoring run by Borgen that made it 21-7 at the half.

After the Wolverines scored on the opening possession of the second half, Saint Vincent answered with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Borgen to Rob O'Hearn that made it 28-14.

The Bearcat defense forced a punt, and on the next possession, SVC scored again, this time on a 34-yard run by freshman running back Chris Monroe, making the score 28-20.

Early in the fourth, Grove City added another touchdown, and the 2-point conversion made it a 16-point game, 36-20.

Borgen added a 1-yard touchdown pass to Alex Charles with 2:31 left to make the score 36-26, but SVC's 2-point conversion attempt failed.

The Bearcats attempted an onside kickoff, but Grove City recovered.  However, on the first play of the drive, GCC fumbled the ball back to SVC with 2:24 left on the clock.

After driving to the Wolverine's 22-yard line, an interception ended the drive.

Borgen had 274 yards passing and two touchdowns, completing 29 of 45 passes. Matt Duffey caught 8 passes for 73 yards while Alex Charles had 7 receptions for 108 yards and a TD.

Chris Monroe led the ground attack with 64 yards on 9 carries, while Borgen had 63 yards rushing.

SVC outgained Grove City 419-298 in offensive yardage, and had 23 first downs compared to 19 for the hosts.

Saint Vincent is now 0-9 on the season, 0-7 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, while Grove City improves to 4-5 (2-5 PAC).  The Bearcats close out the season at home on Saturday, November 16, hosting Bethany College in the "Green Game" at 1PM.
