The Saint Vincent offense put up 26 points and tallied over 400 yards, but the team lost to Grove City on the road by a score of 36-26.
SVC was unable to overcome three turnovers and 11 penalties on the afternoon. Â
Two of those turnovers occurred on the Bearcats' first two drives, each proving to be costly. A fumble on the first play from scrimmage led to a nine-play, 41-yard scoring drive. On the first play following the kickoff, another Bearcat fumble was returned 30 yards for a touchdown, giving the hosts a quick 14-0 lead.
Grove City extended the lead to 21-0 early in the second quarter, but SVC quarterback
Andy Borgen led the team on a 12-play, 75-yard drive that was highlighted by a 21-yard Borgen run, and capped by a 1-yard scoring run by Borgen that made it 21-7 at the half.
After the Wolverines scored on the opening possession of the second half, Saint Vincent answered with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Borgen to
Rob O'Hearn that made it 28-14.
The Bearcat defense forced a punt, and on the next possession, SVC scored again, this time on a 34-yard run by freshman running back
Chris Monroe, making the score 28-20.
Early in the fourth, Grove City added another touchdown, and the 2-point conversion made it a 16-point game, 36-20.
Borgen added a 1-yard touchdown pass to
Alex Charles with 2:31 left to make the score 36-26, but SVC's 2-point conversion attempt failed.
The Bearcats attempted an onside kickoff, but Grove City recovered. However, on the first play of the drive, GCC fumbled the ball back to SVC with 2:24 left on the clock.
After driving to the Wolverine's 22-yard line, an interception ended the drive.
Borgen had 274 yards passing and two touchdowns, completing 29 of 45 passes.
Matt Duffey caught 8 passes for 73 yards while
Alex Charles had 7 receptions for 108 yards and a TD.
Chris Monroe led the ground attack with 64 yards on 9 carries, while Borgen had 63 yards rushing.Â
SVC outgained Grove City 419-298 in offensive yardage, and had 23 first downs compared to 19 for the hosts. Â
Saint Vincent is now 0-9 on the season, 0-7 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, while Grove City improves to 4-5 (2-5 PAC). The Bearcats close out the season at home on Saturday, November 16, hosting Bethany College in the "Green Game" at 1PM.
