BOX SCORE

LATROBE (Aug. 30) - Sophomore Emily Johns posted two goals and five points as the Saint Vincent women's soccer team opened the 2013 season with a 5-2 win over Penn State Altoona on the SVC Turf.

The win gives the Bearcats a 1-0 record to open the season, while the Lions fall to 0-1 to begin the campaign.

Junior Abbey Neish started the scoring with a goal from Johns just over seven minutes in. Johns scored her first goal of the game four-plus minutes later on a direct kick from just outside the 18-yard box.

Altoona got on the board 22:27 into the first half with a ball chipped past SVC senior keeper Cassie Overly off of a free kick.

The Bearcats added two more goals to close out the first half with a 4-1 lead. Johns scored her second goal of the contest at 38:46 on a one-timer from about 25 yards out and just inside the sideline courtesy of a pass from sophomore Meghan Smith. Smith then scored her own goal 44 seconds later when she battled with a defender and went lower right corner past a diving keeper.

In the second half, junior Amie Dobracki notched the Bearcats lone score of the period off a scrum in front of the cage following a corner kick by senior Monika Derboghossian.

The Lions added a final goal at the 66:08-mark off a direct kick that went just under the cross bar.

SVC out-shot Altoona, 9-8 for the game, thanks to a 6-2 advantage on the first half. The Bearcats also took five corner kicks to the Lions one.

Overly earned her first win of the season, allowing two goals and making two saves in 77:48. Junior Kelsey Farrand worked the final 12:12 and made a save on the only shot on goal she faced.

SVC returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 1, traveling to Carlisle, Pa., for a 1 p.m. match against Dickinson.
