BOX SCORE
The Saint Vincent Bearcats lost their Presidents' Athletic Conference football opener on the road at Waynesburg University by a score of 23-6.
SVC got off to the early lead, as
Andy Borgen connected with
Matt Duffey on the third play from scrimmage, with the catch-and-run going for 63 yards and a Bearcat touchdown. After the extra point was missed, SVC had a 6-0 lead.
The score remained that way until Carter Hill completed a pass to Andrew English for a 14-yard score midway through the second quarter. The extra point gave the hosts a 7-6 lead, which they carried into the locker room at the half.
With 3:36 left in the third, Hill again had a touchdown pass, this time to Mike Ferraro, that made the score 13-6.
After a field goal made it 16-6 early in the fourth, Waynesburg added a late touchdown on a 20-yard run by Jerry Lawman.
Heavy rain throughout the game made the ball hard to handle, resulting in a pair of SVC fumbles, one interception and several dropped passes.
David Emmanuel carried the ball 15 times for 31 yards for SVC, while Borgen ran three times for 18 yards.
Matt Deakins was 9-for-18 through the air for 60 yards, while
David Butler had five receptions for 45 yards.Â
Dustin Lowman had a pair of catches for 44 yards.
As a team, SVC had only 9 first downs on the day, tallying 225 yards, while Waynesburg had 336 yards of offense. The teams combined for 15 punts, as both offenses struggled with the weather.Â
Dan Wirkowski,
Jake Keller and
Tom Mackowick each recorded 7 tackles for Saint Vincent.Â
Mitchell DePellegrini had a sack and a blocked kick.
The Bearcats are now 0-2 on the year (0-1 PAC) and will take to the field at home for the first time this season next Saturday at 1PM, hosting Westminster in the 2013 Homecoming game.
