Things started off well for the visiting Bearcats, holding the Tartans on their first drive, forcing a punt. Â
Cameron Mack blocked Tyler Kohman's punt and
Renny LaRue-Holloman recovered the ball at the CMU 28. Â However, the Bearcats were stopped on a 4th-and-1 play at the visitors' 19, turning the ball over on downs.
On the ensuing drive, CMU's Andrew Hearon completed a pass to John Prather for a 20-yard touchdown, putting the hosts in front, 7-0.
Early in the second quarter, a Saint Vincent fumble gave the Tartans the ball at their own 33, and they put together a 13-play, 67-yard drive with Sam Benger's 10-yard run making it a 14-0 game.
Later in the quarter, after an SVC punt, CMU once again put together a scoring drive, with Hearon completing a 13-yard pass to Max Reinertsen for the score, making it 21-0 at with 1:16 left in the half. Â
Early in the third quarter,
Tyler Donahue's pass was intercepted by CMU's Ryan Aitken at the CMU 35. Â Six plays later, the hosts scored again to make the score 28-0. Â
Evan Shimensky then took over at quarterback for Saint Vincent and provided a spark, completing three passes to
Damon Black for a total of 66 yards, taking the ball to the CMU 9-yard-line. Â After an interference penalty in the end zone,
Shavonta Craft scored on a 2-yard run to get the Bearcats on the board, 28-7.
An interception early in the fourth quarter set up another CMU score that made it 34-7 before Shimensky went back to work on offense. Â He completed passes on consecutive plays to Black for 15 yards, Craft for 38 yards, and Black again for 7 yards in the end zone. Â The extra point was blocked, leaving the score at 34-13. Â CMU took over near midfield after recovering an onside kickoff attempt and added a late touchdown.
For the Bearcats, Donahue led the ground game with 17 carries for 74 yards. Craft ran the ball 8 times for 37 yards. Â Shimensky completed 9 of 15 passes for 152 yards. Â Black was the leading receiver with 8 catches for 118 yards. Â Defensively,
Devin Anderson had 10 tackles, while
Brett Capobianco,
Kim Ornis and
Dwayne Brown tallied 8 each.Â
With the loss, Saint Vincent falls to 3-4 overall, 2-3 in the PAC. Â Carnegie Mellon is now 4-3 overall, 4-2 in the conference. Â SVC returns to action next Saturday, October 31 at Westminster College. Â
