PHOTO GALLERYThe Bearcat men's soccer team and the Thiel Tomcats battled to a 3-3 tie in a physical game that saw the team combine for more than 60 shots.
Kevin Proctor got the Bearcats on the board in the 19th minute, working his way through the defense and sending a shot back across his body into the lower left corner of the net for the 1-0 lead.
The Bearcats nearly doubled the lead three minutes later, when Zach Kocak's header was saved by Thiel keeper Trey Roller, but the ball bounced right to
Christian Trueax. However, Trueax's header was stopped was blocked by defender Eric Mitchell, keeping the score 1-0.
In the 39th minute, the Tomcats set up for a corner kick, and Zachary Oliver's kick was headed in by Keegan Moss, tying the game. The score would remain 1-1 after 45 minutes of play.
Six minutes into the second half, Oliver's header was saved by White, but the rebound found the foot of John Thiel, who scored to put the visitors in front, 2-1.
The Bearcats continued to battle, and tied the game thanks to solid teamwork in the 59th minute.
Matt Kwitowski sent a cross into the 18 yard box, where Proctor attempted a bicycle kick. Proctor's kick was then headed into the net by
Zachary D'Amico. Less than a minute later, the Bearcats had an opportunity to take the lead when a handball was called in the box, giving Proctor a penalty shot. However, Roller made the save and the game remained tied at 2-2.
In the 66th minute, Thiel's Jordan Lilley tallied the go-ahead goal, assisted by Dominic Walker, but the Bearcats again fought back. With 14:23 remaining in regulation,
Nick Gaudy's shot was saved, but the ball rebounded to Trueax, who drilled the ball into the upper corner of the net to tie the game.
The teams battled for 34 more minutes - 14 in regulation plus two 10:00 overtime periods - before the game ended in a tie, but both teams had opportunities to win. Throughout the game, both Roller and SVC's
Jon White were tested often, and both keepers, along with their respective defenders, played well.
In all, 62 shots were taken, 38 by Saint Vincent and 24 by Thiel. The Bearcats had 20 shots on goal, while Thiel recorded 14. In addition to the defender's save earlier in the game, Roller made 16 saves for Thiel, while White had 11.
Trueax tallied 10 shots, 8 on goal. Proctor, D'Amico and Kocak each recorded 8 shots. For Thiel, Lilley had 9 shots, 5 on net.
The Bearcats are now 1-10-2 overall, 0-1-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.
Saint Vincent returns to action on Saturday, October 10, traveling to New Wilmington to face Westminster College at 1PM.
