BOX SCOREPHOTO GALLERYBETHANY, W.Va. (May 2) – The Saint Vincent softball team dropped a 3-1 decision to top-seeded Bethany College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament elimination game.
After two scoreless innings, Bethany broke through for the game's first run when they put together three straight singles, making it 1-0 Bison after three innings.
Saint Vincent answered right back in the top of the fourth. Freshman
Shelby Noel singled to lead off the frame then advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by freshman
Emily Duerr.
After
Breanne Wallace fouled out, pitcher
Samantha Emert came through with a clutch two-out RBI single to score Noel.
Bethany got two unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. After one out, BC got back to back singles. An error helped Bethany load the bases. Emert tried to escape the jam, striking out a Bison hitter for the second out.
Emert was then a strike away from retiring the Bison when Emily Garretson lofted a two-run single into shallow center field. That Garretson single made it 3-1 Bison.
Noel tried to help SVC rally, singling to start off the sixth. Noel moved to second base on a ground out by Duerr but Noel was stranded in scoring position.
SVC was retired in order in their final at-bat, ending their season.
The Bearcats left five runners on base in the loss, which pushed their total to 15 runners left on in the two PAC Tournament losses to Bethany.
Emert pitched well again in defeat. The sophomore tossed six innings, allowing only one earned run on nine hits. Emert struck out four batters while walking none. Emert finished the season with a 12-6 record.
Noel and Emert both collected two hits in the loss.
Emert and Swettlen were both named to the PAC All-Tournament Team. Thomas More pitcher Mamee Salzer earned the PAC Tournament MVP honors.
Saint Vincent finished the season with a 24-11 record. The 24 wins matches a single-season high for the Bearcats.
