Bearcat swimmers earn wins in return to competition


PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Jan. 16) – After more than a month off from official competition, the Saint Vincent swimming teams got back into action when they faced Bethany College and Chatham University in a Presidents' Athletic Conference meet in Pittsburgh.

Both Saint Vincent teams went 2-0 for the day, beating both the Cougars and the Bison. The SVC men topped Chatham 184-6 and beat Bethany 145-94. The Bearcat women won over Chatham 170-116 and beat Bethany by a 218-39 margin. Along with the victories, the Bearcats set three pool records on the day. 

The Bearcat women got off to a good start, taking first in the 200 Medley Relay. The team of Sarah Sheldon, Grace Reynolds, Marissa Frollo and Ciara Lewis came in at 1:55.47. The quartet of Cassie Trudel, Kelly Kramer, Kat Guevara and Samantha Mears finished in second place in the event (1:57.88).

The SVC team of Hannah Barkey, Frollo, Lewis and Maddie Bartrug would later take first in the 800 Free Relay, with a time of 8:11.33. The time set a new pool record.

Bartrug placed first in the 200 Fly (2:15.81), almost eight seconds faster than the next closest competitor. The freshman also had the top time in the 100 Free, touching the wall at 53.86.

Barkey took home first place in the 1650 Free event, clocking in at 18:59.06, good enough to set a new pool record. Jill Cline was third with a time of 19:56.66. SVC finished 1-2 in the 100 Back, as Gianna Boburka (1:07.64) came in first and Bayle Shreve (1:07.94) placed second.

Bartrug, Frollo and Guevara claimed the top three positions in the 100 Fly.

Kramer (2:19.16), Boburka (2:21.49) and Sheldon (2:21.72) followed suit, sweeping the top three positions in the 200 Back. Kramer then later added a top time in the 400 IM (4:52.66), a time that established a new pool record.

Reynolds finished tops in the 100 Breast, coming in at 1:12.06. Reynolds added a second place finish in the 200 Breast (2:41.35).

Frollo took second in the 200 Free, with a time of 2:03.30. Lewis (26.05) and Mears (27.13) finished in second and third place respectively in the 50 Free. Trudel came in second place in the 500 Free, clocking in at 5:36.38.

On the mens' side, the SVC team of Adam Gordish, Michael Marinchak, Xander Emili and Marshall Grubb finished first in the 200 Medley Relay, with a time of 1:42.26. The quartet of Jacob Davis, Kameron Faychak, Matt Tashima and Allen Sant were right behind, finish second at 1:42.68.

Sean Doyle and Gordish came in second and third respectively in the 1650 Free. Doyle clocked in at 18:00.82, while Gordish finished in 18:14.90.

Tashima was first in the 200 Fly event, timing in at 2:14.84. Tashima later added another top finish in the 100 Fly (55.84). Meanwhile, Faychak claimed the top spot in both the 50 Free (23.38) and 100 Free (51.94).

Davis and Matt Crum took the top two spots in the 200 Free. Davis finished in 1:50.92 and Crum at 1:56.03. Davis also took first place in the 200 Back, finishing with a time of 2:06.99.

Alex Bolen finished tops in the 100 Breast, with a time of 1:02.46. Peter Becker finished third with a time of 1:07.20. Becker would later add a first place finish in the 200 Breast, with a time of 2:30.52.

Crum (5:09.73) and Sant (5:30.98) finished in second and third place in the 500 Free.

The Bearcat men's team now sits at 7-2 overall and a perfect 4-0 in the PAC. The Bearcat women improved to 6-3 overall and 3-1 in the league.

Both teams return to action when they host Westminster College on Saturday, Jan. 23. The contest will serve as senior day for the Bearcats. Meet time is set for 1 p.m.
