Bearcats fall on the road to Bethany to end 2016 season

The Bethany Bison scored 19 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to defeat the Bearcats by a score of 32-31 to end the season in West Virginia.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Bearcats got on the board early in the second, when Derek Stewart and DJ Oceant-Kelly teamed for a 49-yard touchdown pass.  Sam Elliott's point after put the visitors in front, 7-0, with 13:15 left in the second.

Darrell Burrell then came up with an interception of a Chase Kinemond pass at the Bethany 35 and returned the ball to just outside the red zone.  Five plays later, Stewart found Damon Black Jr in the back of the end zone from six yards out, and the Bearcats were in front 14-0.

On the next Bethany drive, it was again Burrell causing a turnover, this time hitting Kinemond and causing a fumble that was recovered by Jean Cherilus.  However, the Bearcats were stopped on the drive and forced to punt.

Bethany's next drive resulted in a third straight turnover, as Kinemond was hit by a host of Bearcats and the fumble was recovered by Garret Virostek at the SVC 37.  A 22-yard run by Shavonta Craft helped move the ball well into Bison territory, but a 39-yard field goal attempt by Elliott was wide to the right, and the Bearcats turned the ball over at the Bethany 22 with just 58 seconds left in the half.

The Bison were unable to move the ball on three plays, and Saint Vincent called a timeout with 24 ticks left, forcing a punt.  However, a roughing the kicker penalty by the Bearcats gave the Bison a first down at their own 38 with 13 seconds on the clock.  Jalen Holmes broke free for a 20-yard run and the Bison managed to stop the clock with just 1 second remaining.  Kinemond then dropped back from the SVC 42 and threw a long pass into the end zone, where it was tipped by a Bethany player into the hands of teammate Terry Linyard for a touchdown as time expired.  Chris Ray's point after left the score at 14-7 at the break.

Early in the third quarter, Derek Stewart was hit while throwing, with his pass then falling a couple of yards shy of intended receiver Oceant-Kelly.  Two Bison defenders converged under the wounded pass, reached for it at the same time and collided.  Oceant-Kelly recovered and came back toward the ball, and as the two defenders collided, the ball bounced into his hands.  Oceant-Kelly then ran the remaining 17 yards for what went into the books as a 28-yard touchdown pass.

The Bison scored on their next drive but missed the extra point, making it a 21-13 Bearcat lead, but Saint Vincent answered back quickly.  Stewart threw a 40-yard TD score to Dalton Dietrich, who caught the ball near the 30 and ran straight down the middle of the field for a score.  Elliott's extra point gave the Bearcats at 28-13 lead with 7:19 remaining in the third quarter.

Elliott then extended the SVC lead to 31-13 with a 26-yard field goal near the end of the third quarter.

Once again, the Bison came right back, putting together a scoring drive that ended with a short rushing touchdown by Holmes to make the score 31-19 just 30 seconds into the fourth quarter.  SVC's Cherilus then broke up the 2-point conversion attempt.

The Bearcats then turned the ball over on their next possession, as Stewart was intercepted for the second time, and the Bison wasted no time getting on the board.  A 37-yard touchdown pass from Kinemond to Tyler Ambush made it a 31-26 game with 12:32 remaining in the fourth.

On the ensuing drive, the Bearcats turned the ball over again, as Stewart was hit in the pocket and fumbled, with the hosts taking over at their own 47 with just over eight minutes remaining. The Bison then took the lead on an 18-yard run by Holmes at the 6:11 mark.  A penalty after the touchdown moved the ball back to the 18-yard line for the 2-point conversion attempt, and the pass into the end zone was broken up, apparently leaving the score at 32-31 in favor of the Bison.  However, a roughing the passer penalty on the Bearcats gave the Bison a second chance, this time from the 9 yard line.  This time, the Bison fumbled the snap, keeping the difference at just one point.

After the teams traded punts, SVC took over possession after a Bethany punt at their own 20 yard line with 2:53 remaining.  The drive began with a 12-yard completion to Ryan Crawford, followed two plays later by a 15-yard grab by Dalton Dietrich.  After a short completion to Crawford, Stewart was then sacked on second down, moving the ball back to the SVC 40 for a third-down play with 1:33 on the clock.  Heavy pressure on Stewart forced a pass out of bounds, setting up a fourth-and-14 play.  Stewart's pass was intercepted, ending the Bearcats' final chance.

Stewart ended the day 30-of-42 through the air for 369 yards and four touchdowns.  Oceant-Kelly caught 7 passes for 115 yards, while Black had 7 grabs for 69 yards.  Dietrich caught 5 passes for 99 yards.  The Bearcat ground game struggled, with both Stewart and Craft each rushing for 19 yards.

Devin Anderson and Matt Jenkins each recorded 9 tackles, while Kim Ornis tallied six and Ben Davis had five.

Saint Vincent ends the season with an overall record of 5-5, 3-5 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.
