Medaille outlasts Bearcats in non-conference play, 21-16

LATROBE, Pa. (March 19) - The Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team suffered a 21-16 loss to visiting Medaille College in non-conference action at the SVC Turf.

Senior midfielder Sarah Wallerstedt tallied six goals, an assist and four caused turnovers in the contest. Junior Maggie Nelson chipped in five goals, an assist and five ground balls. Senior Hannah Carroll added four goals and three assists to total seven points. The strong showing from Nelson has pushed her into second all-time in school history in points (199).

The Bearcats started fast, jumping out to an early 2-1 lead with a goal each from Wallerstedt and Nelson. After back-to-back goals by Medaille, Carroll tied the game at 3-3 with 24:28 left in the first half. The Mavericks scored five of the next six goals, taking an 8-4 lead with 13:12 left in the half.

Nelson would cut the deficit in half (8-6), scoring two goals in a 30 second span. However, Medaille kept firing, scoring six goals during a seven minute period to make it 14-6 late in the first half. Nelson and Carroll would each record another score before the Mavs closed the first half scoring with a late goal. The Bearcats faced a 15-8 deficit after 30 minutes of action in a high scoring first half.

The momentum carried over to the second half for Medaille, as they used two quick goals to push the lead to nine (17-8) with 27:54 left to play. However, the Bearcats refused to quick, scoring five unanswered goals to make it 17-13 with 15:24 remaining. The five goals were scored by Carroll and Wallerstedt. Medaille was able to answer back with two goals to essentially end all hopes of a Bearcat comeback.

Wallerstedt would add two more goals and sophomore Courtney Kloos recorded her first goal of the season to round out the scoring for SVC.

Wallerstedt and Carroll both registered seven point performances in the loss, while Nelson totaled six points. Katie Stallings and Naomi Schwaiger each recorded an assist.

Sophomore goalkeeper Maria Franey made 13 saves during her 60 minutes of action in net.

The loss drops SVC to 2-2 overall, while Medaille improved to 4-0 for the season.

Saint Vincent returns to action with a home contest against Franciscan on Wednesday, March 22. The contest is slated for 5 p.m.
