LYNCHBURG, Va. (March 4) -
Maggie Nelson recorded seven goals and added three assists as the Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team earned a 12-7 road win over Randolph College in the season opener for both teams.
The victory was the 100th in program history for the women's lacrosse team.
Nelson helped the Bearcats get off to a fast start, tallying the team's first goal of the season less than a minute into the contest. The junior would tack on another at the 24:37 mark of the first half to make it 2-0 SVC. After the hosts answered with a score of their own, it was
Kami Davis scoring off a pass from Nelson, extending the Bearcat advantage to 3-1 with 18:51 left in the first half.
Randolph would counter back with three of the next four goals to tie the contest at 4-4,
Naomi Schwaiger scored her second of three first half goals to help SVC reclaim the lead. Nelson and Schwaiger would account for the next three goals, helping SVC to an 8-4 halftime lead.
The Wildcats would open the second half with three straight goals to close the deficit within a goal (8-7) with 17:04 to play. That is when the defense locked down and Nelson went to work offensively. Nelson would score the next three goals and add an assist on a score from
Kennedy Ains that made it 12-7 with 5:11 left in the game.
Along with her 10-point day, Nelson also added eight draw controls, four ground balls and four caused turnovers. Schwaiger tallied a single-game career high of three goals, while Davis and Ains each recorded their first goals as Bearcats.

Maria Franey made six saves in net to pick up the victory.
Katie Stallings chipped in three ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers. Freshman defender

Alex Piampiano and
Hannah Graft each notched two caused turnovers.
Saint Vincent held narrow team margins in shots (25-24) and draw controls (12-8) in the contest.
The Bearcats continue their Spring Break trip with a game against Division II Shorter University on Monday, March 6. Start time is slated for 7 p.m. at Northeast Regional Park in Davenport, Florida.
