LATROBE, Pa. (April 18) - The Saint Vincent men's lacrosse fell behind early and dropped a 15-6 decision to visiting Otterbein University in non-conference action.
The visiting Cardinals raced out to a 6-1 lead after the first quarter and gained an 11-1 edge at halftime. Saint Vincent was able to hold a slight 5-4 advantage in the second half but never threatened to make a comeback attempt.
Sophomore
Jeremy Kennedy tallied the lone first half goal, off an assist from
Joe Puvel at the 4:09 mark in the first quarter. Otterbein would dominate the remainder of the first half to build a double-digit lead.
Both teams recorded three goals in the third quarter, with Saint Vincent getting a goal each from
Hunter Sharp, Puvel and
Zach Novelli.
Jon Succop scored in the fourth off a pass from
Jon Wetzel and
Mitchell Bachman added a goal off a pass from
Eric Seader to finish up the scoring for the home team.
Saint Vincent held a 40-31 advantage in shots for the match, including a 19-3 differential in favor of the Bearcats in the fourth quarter. Otterbein held a 13-11 edge in face-offs and converted 4-of-5 extra man opportunities in the game.
Michael Grus put together a strong showing defensively for SVC, tallying nine ground balls and four caused turnovers. Connor Dziewit led the Cardinals with four goals and two assists in the victory.
The loss ended the Bearcats' four game winning streak. SVC now sits at 5-7 overall for the season. Otterbein improved to 7-7 in 2017.
Saint Vincent hosts rival Thiel College in a Ohio River Lacrosse showdown on Sunday, April 23. Start time is slated for 1 p.m. at Chuck Noll Field.
