Fourth quarter rally helps B-W down SVC, 14-10



LATROBE, Pa. (Feb. 28) - Despite holding a narrow lead entering the fourth quarter, the Saint Vincent men's lacrosse team dropped a 14-10 decision to Baldwin Wallace University in non-conference action at the SVC turf. 

Jeremy Kennedy continued his strong play, leading the team with four goals in the contest. Alex Mueser and Frank Casile both chipped in three-point efforts in the loss. 

Behind two goals from Kennedy, Saint Vincent held an early 3-1 advantage after the first quarter. B-W started the second quarter strong with three straight goals, including a man-up score to take a 4-3 edge at the 6:42 mark. Kennedy scored off a pass from Mueser to tie the game at 4-4 with 1:42 left in the quarter. Less than a minute later, Casile scored unassisted goal to make it 5-4 with 1:01 left in the quarter. B-W tacked on a goal with eight seconds left in the half to tie the game at 5-5. 

After an early score by B-W in the third quarter helped the Yellow Jackets regain the lead, Saint Vincent battled back with three straight goals to take an 8-6 advantage. Zach Novelli started the run with an unassisted score to tie the game. Kennedy and Mueser tacked on goals to give SVC the two-goal advantage att he 4:54 mark. After the two teams exchanged goals, B-W added another last second goal to end the third quarter, cutting the SVC lead to 9-8 into the fourth. 

Baldwin Wallace carried that momentum into the fourth, scoring three goals in the first three minutes of the quarter and the first five goals overall to seize control of the match. The run gave the Yellow Jackets a 13-9 edge before Novelli scored an unassisted tally with 5:42 left. B-W added a late goal to complete the scoring.

For the game, B-W outshot SVC by a 48-33 margin, including a 13-5 differential in the fourth for the Yellow Jackets. Saint Vincent committed 22 turnovers, while B-W had 16 miscues. Brandon Martin tallied 11 saves in net over 60 minutes of action for the Bearcats. John Wohlin picked up a team-best five groundballs while winning 7-of-13 face-offs. Anthony Tommarello won all five of his face-off attempts. 

The loss drops Saint Vincent to 2-1 overall, while B-W improves to 3-1 in non-conference action. 

Saint Vincent returns to action with a road match against Marymount University in Virginia on Saturday, March 3. Start time is slated for 1 p.m.
