Nelson, Schwaiger set records in 25-10 victory over Chatham

LATROBE, Pa. (April 11) - Maggie Nelson and Naomi Schwaiger tallied 11 goals each as the Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team rolled to a 25-10 victory over Chatham University in Ohio River Lacrosse Conference action.

Nelson totaled 19 points (11 goals, eight assists) to set a new NCAA Division III single-game points record, eclipsing former Bearcat Nora Posival's record which was set on this date back in 2013 against Franciscan. Nelson's 19 point performance was the second-most in NCAA history – Division II Tiffin University's Alexandria Quast recorded 20 points on seven goals and 13 assists in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win at Walsh University on April 5, 2013.

During the game, Nelson also eclipsed the 300 goal mark and the 400 point mark for her career. By surpassing 300 career goals, Nelson becomes just the seventh player in Division III history to achieve that mark. By surpassing the 400 point mark, Nelson becomes just the 10th player in Division III history to do so.

Schwaiger also put together the finest offensive showing of her career, tallying 11 goals to tie Nelson's single-game goal record. Schwaiger added an assist to tally 12 points in the contest.

After Chatham jumped out to a 2-1 advantage, Saint Vincent responded with nine straight goals to take a commanding 10-2 lead with 20:17 left in the first half. The vast majority of damage being done by Nelson and Schwaiger. Rachel Belles tallied a goal and Corinne Burk added an assist during the Bearcat run.

Back-to-back goals by Nelson and Schwaiger pushed the Bearcat lead to double digits at 14-4 with 15:05 to play in the first half. Belles, Nelson and Schwaiger tacked on three more goals to push the lead to 17-4. Schwaiger would tack on two more goals before halftime to give SVC a 19-7 lead after 30 minutes.

In the second half, Schwaiger added five more goals while Alex Piampiano recorded a goal. Nelson became primarily a distributor in the second half, setting up the offense and tallying four assists over the final 30 minutes of play.

Piampiano put together a strong all-around game by adding five draw controls and four ground balls. Belles tallied four draw controls, five ground balls and three caused turnovers.

The victory moves Saint Vincent to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in ORLC play. Chatham drops to 3-8 overall and 1-5 in league contests.

Saint Vincent will host Franklin College for Senior Day on Saturday, April 14. Start time is slated for 2 p.m. Nelson, Piampiano and Libby Volna will be honored prior to the match with the Grizzlies.
