Freshmen lead Saint Vincent to sweep over Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. (April 14) - The Saint Vincent softball team earned a road sweep over Grove City in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader. The Bearcats claimed a 7-4 win in game one before holding on for a 3-2 victory in game two.

The Saint Vincent freshmen class played a large role in the sweep of the Wolverines, as a pair of first year players claimed pitching wins in the circle and two home runs by freshmen paced the offense.

Game 1 Recap  - Saint Vincent 7, Grove City 4

A three-run home run by Alona Sleith gave SVC a 4-1 lead after three innings. Run scoring hits by Erica Smiley, Kelly Flaherty and Shelby Noel strengthened the advantage to 7-1 in the sixth inning. The host Wolverines tallied three runs in the bottom of the seventh to cap the scoring.

Noel continued her hot streak at the plate, going 3-for-4 with another double in the opener. Lauren Miller and Sleith contributed two hits each to bolster the offense.

Riley Assalone improved to 7-1 in her rookie season, tossing seven strong innings. The freshman allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits. Assalone struck out three and walked three.

Grove City scored a run in the fourth and added another in the bottom of the seventh. However, Sleith closed the door to move to 4-2 on the season in the circle.
