LATROBE, Pa. (April 24) -
Maggie Nelson set single-season NCAA Division III records for goals and points as the Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team beat Westminster 21-18 in Ohio River Lacrosse Conference action at Harold Burry Stadium.
Nelson recorded a new program single-game high 12 goals while adding three assists for a total of 15 points against the Titans. Nelson set a new NCAA Division III single-season record for goals, surpassing the previous record of 115 goals set by Tammy Mullen of Becker College back in 2009. She has scored 10 or more goals in 10 of the 14 games for Saint Vincent this season.
Nelson also established a new NCAA Division III single-season high for points, breaking the previous record that stood for 22 seasons. The previous high was 154 points by Courtney Crangi of Goucher College in 1997. The Jefferson, Md. product has racked up 124 goals and 160 points during her senior season.
That makes three NCAA Division III records broken by Nelson this season, as she set a new single-game points record with 19 against Chatham University back on April 11. During her four-year career, Maggie has now totaled 347 goals and 471 points, which ranks her second among Division III players all-time in each category. Ashley Hansbury (2008-11) formerly of Curry College ranks first in both with 362 goals and 500 points during her career.
SVC surged out to a 6-1 lead with 22:09 left in the first half when
Calsey Holshue scored off a pass from
Naomi Schwaiger. Westminster slowly worked its way back into the game, eventually tying the score at 8-8 with just 1:53 left in the first half. Schwaiger scored off a pass from Nelson to give SVC a 9-8 halftime lead.
The Bearcats opened the second half with a goal by
Courtney Kloos and then added another score by Nelson off a pass from
Rachel Belles, extending the advantage to 11-8. The Titans would tally the next four goals to take their first lead of the game, at 12-11 with 24:29 remaining in the game. With Westminster in front 13-12, Nelson ripped off four straight goals to give SVC the lead for good. The Titans would close the deficit back to a single goal (16-15) with 16:37 remaining. However, the Bearcats tallied five straight goals, including two each from Schwaiger and Nelson.
Along with Nelson's offensive output, Schwaiger added five points (4g, 1a) and Kloos tallied three goals.
LingEr Williams paced the defensive with five ground balls, while Belles tallied 10 draw controls to bring her season total to 97. Bria Braddock had an outstanding offensive performance for the Titans, as she scored a Westminster school record 11 goals in the loss.
Saint Vincent improves to 11-3 overall and 8-2 ORLC play. Westminster drops to 4-9 overall and 4-6 in league games.
The Bearcats wrap up the regular season with a road contest against Hanover College on Saturday, April 28. Start time is set for 11 a.m.
