WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 8) - The Saint Vincent softball team rolled up 29 runs on 35 hits as they earned a road split with Waynesburg University in the Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader.

The Bearcats fell 11-10 in the opening game before bouncing back to roll past the Yellow Jackets by a 19-2 in a shortened game two.

Game 1 Recap - Waynesburg 11, Saint Vincent 10

Shelby Noel led the 10 run, 19 hit offensive attack by going 4-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, three RBI and two runs scored in game one. Victoria Culver added three hits and three RBI. Rachel Harenchar, Emily Duerr, Lauren Miller and Morgan Murphy each added multi-hit games.

Saint Vincent jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first, using RBI singles from Noel and Miller. However, coupled with some shaky defensive play, Waynesburg responded with six runs in the bottom of the frame. The Bearcats came back in the second with a four-spot to tie the game at 6-6. The big hit of the inning came from Noel, who slugged a two-run double that short hopped the wall in left field.

After keeping the Yellow Jackets off the scoreboard in the bottom of the second, Murphy put SVC in front with an RBI single in the third, making the score 7-6. The two teams exchanged runs to make the score 8-7. Waynesburg would tack on four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to regain the lead, at 11-8.

The score remained that way until the top of the seventh inning when Saint Vincent attempted a comeback. Alona Sleith led off with a double to deep center and scored on a two-out hit by Kelly Flaherty, making the score 11-9. Murphy and Culver then added back-to-back singles to close the deficit at 11-10. However, that was as close as Saint Vincent could get as Waynesburg got the final out to seal the victory.

Sleith suffered the loss in the circle to put her record at 3-2 for the season.

Game 2 Recap - Saint Vincent 19, Waynesburg 2 (5 Innings)

After falling behind 2-1 after the first inning in game two, Saint Vincent took control of the contest. The Bearcat bats came alive in the top of the third when Noel tripled home Harenchar and Culver, giving SVC a 3-2 lead. Sleith would then launch her seventh homer of the season to extend the lead to 5-2.

The Bearcats added five more runs in the fourth, breaking the game open when Duerr cleared the bases with a three-run double to make it 10-2. Flaherty tacked on an RBI single to make it 11-2 after four innings. Saint Vincent continued its offensive onslaught with eight more runs in the fifth to extend the advantage to 19-2. The inning was highlighted by an RBI double from Riley Assalone and a two-run double by Harenchar.

That was more than enough run support for Assalone, who tossed five solid innings to move her record to 6-0 on the season. The freshman allowed just two runs on four hits to cool off the Waynesburg offense.

Sleith and Flaherty each recorded three hits in game two, while Noel went 2-for-3 with four runs scored and two RBI. Duerr added a multi-hit effort as well in the victory.

The split moves Saint Vincent to 14-4 overall and 5-1 in PAC play. Waynesburg moves to 8-10 overall and 1-3 in league action.

During the doubleheader, Noel combined to go 6-for-7 at the plate with two doubles, a triple, six runs scored and five RBI. Flaherty, Murphy, Duerr, Culver and Sleith all added four hits each in the twinbill.

Saint Vincent is scheduled to host Mount Aloysius College in non-conference action tomorrow (April 9). First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
