Game Recap: Football |

Stasko's late TD lifts SVC to 21-17 victory

Mike Stasko scored a pair of touchdowns, including one in the game's final minute, to lift Saint Vincent to a 21-17 victory over Waynesburg University on the road in a Presidents' Athletic Conference football matchup.

Stasko scored from 8 yards out with just 46 seconds remaining, giving SVC back the lead in what had been a back-and-forth contest.  An interception by Tekoah Guedes with just 20 ticks left then sealed the win for the Bearcats.

Under rainy conditions in Waynesburg, both offenses were forced to punt on their first drives of the game.  But after a Bearcat punt, Waynesburg's Justin Flack broke through the middle and had a clear path to the end zone, scoring on a 68-yard run with 8:05 left in the first quarter.  The point after made it 7-0.

The rest of the first quarter was a series of defensive stops and punts on both sides of the field.  Early in the second quarter, the Bearcats put together a strong drive, starting from its own 12-yard-line, but a Lorenzo Cota pass was intercepted at the Waynesburg 5-yard-line, ending the threat.

After the SVC defense held the Jackets deep in their own end, a short 14-yard punt gave SVC great field position, taking over at the visitors' 20.

Six rushing plays later, Mike Stasko scored from five yards out, and Nick Srnka added the extra point, tying the game at 7-7 with 2:24 remaining in the half.  The teams would eventually head into the locker rooms with the score still tied.

The third quarter was another defensive battle, as neither team found the end zone.  The Jackets scored on a 30-yard field goal by Mike Ryhal with just 1:26 left, to take a 10-7 lead.

Early in the fourth, another short punt by Waynesburg gave SVC the ball at midfield.  Stasko ran for 13 yards on the first play of the drive, then followed with a 26-yard burst on the next play.  After a penalty on first down moved the ball back to the 16, David Marshall Jr took a Cota handoff and ran 16 yards for the score, putting SVC in front, 13-10.  Srnka's point after made it a 4-point game.

Waynesburg bounced right back with a 13-play, 75-yard drive that culminated in a 4-yard touchdown pass, retaking a 17-14 lead with just 4:22 left in the contest.

On the next drive, Cota hit his biggest pass of the game, a 37-yard strike to Braden Hone, moving the ball to the Jacket 25.  On first down, Marshall ran for 9 yards, and Stasko followed with a hard-fought 2-yard gain for another first down.  After a 6-yard pass completion to Cody Evans moved the ball to the 8, Stasko did the rest, scoring the eventual game-winning touchdown.

Still, the hosts had one last chance, but the Guedes interception gave the Bearcats their second win of the season.

For the day, SVC held a 261-226 advantage in total yards, as the Bearcats recorded 14 first downs as compared to 12 for the Jackets.  The rain kept the game mostly on the ground, with SVC rushing for 185 yards, while the hosts tallied 161.

Stasko carried the ball 31 times for 145 yards, while Marshall had 4 carries for 30 yards.  Cota was 8-for-17 passing for 76 yards.  Sam Nowicki had 4 catches, all in the first half, for 37 yards.  Defensively, four Bearcats each recorded 7 tackles – George Hillen, Gianni Gonzalez, Cam Norris and Izaak Gray.  Mike Turner Jr and Vinny Pysnik each had six tackles.  Gray had two tackles behind the line of scrimmage, while Cody Henry recorded a sack.

SVC is 2-5 overall, 2-4 in the PAC.  Waynesburg falls to 1-7 overall, 1-6 in the PAC.

The Bearcats will be back in action next Saturday, November 2, hosting Grove City College at 1PM at Chuck Noll Field.
