The Geneva College Golden Tornadoes overcame an early deficit to defeat Saint Vincent on Homecoming Day in Latrobe, 48-10.
SVC got ion the board first, moving the ball well on its first drive of the game. Quarterback
Michael Navarro hit
Phil Harding for a 30-yard pass to move the pass to the Geneva 25, then
David Marshall Jr broke through the line for a 15-yard rush to set up a first-and-goal. However, the Geneva defense held, forcing a 28-yard field goal from
Nick Srnka that put Saint Vincent in front, 3-0.
Late in the first quarter,
Jeremy Wodarek stripped the ball from the Geneva quarterback and
Cody Henry recovered at the Geneva 18. Four plays later, on the second play of the second quarter,
Mike Stasko carried the ball into the end zone from 2 yards out. Srnka's point after gave the Bearcats a 10-0 lead at the 14:19 mark of the second.
Geneva got on the board on the ensuing drive, taking advantage of a 30-yard kickoff return and a Bearcat penalty, starting the drive on the SVC 36. Six plays later, quarterback Amos Luptak kept the ball and powered his way into the end zone. The point after made it a 10-7 game.
After a Saint Vincent punt, Geneva scored again, covering 52 yards in just four plays, with Nick Monteleone rushing for the final 16 for the score.
Up 14-10, Geneva added to its lead at the 4:41 mark of the second, as Daniel Nordaas hit a 30-yard field goal to increase the lead to seven.
After Navarro's pass was intercepted on the first play of the next drive, Luptak responded with a 21-yard pass to Monteleone to move the ball to the SVC 33. Five plays later, he hit Peyton Schell with a 16-yard pass for the touchdown. The two completions on the drive would be the only two by Geneva on the day, as they attempted just five passes all afternoon. The touchdown made the score 24-10 at the half.
Geneva scored on its first drive of the second half, then later in the third, Nordaas hit a 49-yard field goal, the longest ever at Chuck Noll Field, to make the score 34-10.
The visitors added another score late in the third, and a fourth quarter TD on a 67-yard run by Ricky Pitrelli to close the scoring on the afternoon.
Geneva held the advantage for the day in first downs, 20-8, and gained a total of 401 yards on the ground compared to just 89 for the Bearcats. Through the air, SVC had the advantage, with 59 yards passing to Geneva's 37.
Individually, Stakso led SVC with 43 yards on 17 carries, while Marshall had 23 yards on 5 rushes. Navarro was 7-for-18 through the air for 54 yards, while
Lorenzo Cota competed 1 of 5 passes. Harding had four catches for 43 yards.
For Geneva (3-2, 3-1 conference), Frankie Centofanti carried the ball 5 times for 82 yards, while Pitrelli had 78 yards on just 5 carries.
Defensively,
Mike Turner Jr had 10 tackles to lead both squads, including two behind the line of scrimmage.
Izaak Gray and
Ben Davis had 8 tackles each, while
Cam Norris added 7. Norris and
Kyle Coombe each recorded a sack. For the visitors, Dakota Allen had 7 tackles.
Saint Vincent is now 0-4 on the season, 0-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. The Bearcats will travel to Greenville to face Thiel College next Saturday, October 12. Kickoff will be at 3PM.
