The Saint Vincent football team lost its Presidents' Athletic Conference opener by a score of 42-14, on the road against Westminster College.
The first quarter was mostly a defensive battle, as the Bearcats moved the ball well on the opening drive, but failed to covert on a 4th-and-11 from the Titans' 33, turning the ball over on downs after a five-minute drive.
Â
The Bearcat defense forced a Westminster punt four plays later, and once again moved the ball into Titan territory, but the drive stalled near midfield. After a punt, the hosts were able to put together a 9-play, 55-yard scoring drive that ended with a Tyler Greene 5-yard scoring run. The point after made it 7-0 Westminster with less than a minute remaining in the first quarter.
Â
An interception by the Titans then led to another score after a five-play drive, putting the Titans in front, 14-0, with 11:23 on the clock in the second quarter.
Â
Saint Vincent got on the board late in the second quarter.Â
Cam Norris forced a fumble and
Jeremy Wodarek recovered, giving the Bearcats the ball at the Titans' 27. Quarterback
Brady Walker connected with
Keith Kalp for a 17-yard pass on the first play of the drive, and a pass interference call later moved the ball to the 2.Â
Mike Stasko then scored at the 1:27 mark, and the
Nick Srnka extra point made it a 14-7 game at the half.
Â
Westminster received the second half kickoff, and scored on a five-play, 69-yard drive that featured a 64-yard pass that moved the ball to the Bearcat 7.Â
Down 21-7, SVC answered back later in the third quarter, thanks in part to punter
Christian Witchey. A Bearcat drive stalled at their own 36, and Witchey's punt carried and rolled 63 yards to the Titans' 1-yard line. The SVC defense held Westminster to just two yards in the next three plays, forcing a punt.Â
Sam Nowicki fielded the punt at the Westminster 41 and returned it 16 yards to the 25, giving the Bearcats excellent field position. On the first play of the drive, Walker and Kalp teamed for a 25-yard touchdown pass, and Srnka added the point after to make the score 21-14.
Â
However, the fourth quarter belonged to the hosts, as they scored three times, on a rushing touchdown, a passing score, and an 86-yard interception return to the end zone.
Â
For the day, the Titans had 20 first downs, while SVC recorded 15. The Titans outgained SVC 418-209, including 186 on the ground.Â
For Saint Vincent, Walker was 18-32 passing, for 141 yards. Kalp caught five passes for 67 yards, while Nowicki had 7 catches for 41 yards. On the ground, Stasko had 13 carries for 36 yards, while Walker ran 8 times for 35 yards.Â
Defensively,
Tekoah Guedes had 9 tackles, while Wodarek and
Ben Davis each had 7. Norris had two tackles behind the line of scrimmage.
Â
Saint Vincent is now 0-2 on the season, 0-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. The team will return to Chuck Noll Field on Saturday (September 21), hosting Carnegie Mellon University at 1PM.Â
