Saint Vincent hits three home runs in day 2 of Florida trip


The Saint Vincent College softball team split its double header for the second day in the row. The Bearcats fell to John Carroll in game one, 12-4 in five innings. In game two, SVC defeated Eastern University in six innings, 17-9.

In the first game, both teams were scoreless for the first couple innings despite having runners in scoring position. In the top of the third, Saint Vincent broke the scoreless tie as Riley Assalone reached on an error as Jessica Persin scored.
 
The offense continued for the Bearcats when Johnna Karas singled through the right side with Lauren Miller crossing home plate. Karas then stole second which opened the door for Assalone to score from third. Abbey Ginter capped off the inning with a RBI double off the centerfield fence that brought home Karas to give SVC a 4-0 lead.
 
The Blue Streaks quickly answered as they scored four runs in the bottom of the third. JCU kept the offense going in the fourth by adding three runs on two hits and an error. In the bottom of the fifth, the Blue Streaks closed out the game by scoring the final five runs on six hits to enforce the eight-run rule.
 
Karas went 2-3 from the plate a run batted in and scoring once. Samantha Love was credited with the loss after going 4.2 innings allowing nine runs on nine hits and six walks.

Saint Vincent repeated its feat of taking the early, this time in the first inning. Mallory Halleck got the Bearcats on the board with a three-run blast over the centerfield wall as Miller and Karas were on base. Kelsey Tobin kept the momentum going with a single into center then advanced to third on an error by the centerfielder, Ginter scored on the play.
 
Shae Robson tripled to right center in the next at-bat to bring home Tobin. Kaylee Ludwick completed the scoring with a sacrifice fly to left as Robson tagged up from third. SVC led 6-0 after the opening frame.
 
Eastern notched a run in the top of the second but Saint Vincent kept the hot bats going. The Bearcats exploded for nine runs in the second led by a three-run shot off the bat of Ginter. Halleck also drove in two more runs with a single through the middle. Saint Vincent led the Eagles 15-1 as the game progressed to the third.
 
In the top of the third, Eastern added two more runs to cut the deficit to 12 (15-3). The Eagles kept the scoring attack going as they plated five runs on three hits to make the score 15-8 at the middle of the fourth before adding a single run in the fifth.
 
The bottom half of the fifth, Halleck homered for the second time in the game as this one stayed just inside the right field foul pole. The Bearcats closed out the game in the sixth when Persin tripled to right center as Hanna Pavsek scored after being walked in the previous at-bat. SVC won by the eight runs in six innings.
 
Halleck went a perfect 4-4 in the game with eight RBI and scoring three times. Ginter went 2-3 from the plate, driving in three runs and scoring twice. Monica Gurley picked up the win as she went five innings, giving up four runs on six hits and walks with three strikeouts.
 
Saint Vincent (2-2) takes on Berea College (Ky.) on Wednesday before facing Elizabethtown College. Game one starts at 10:15 a.m. with game two following at 12:30 p.m.
