Men's soccer falls to Geneva

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (Oct. 16) – Sophomore Andres Mateos Carrion netted his second goal of the season on a strike late in the second half, but it wasn't enough, as the Bearcats were defeated 5-1 by host Geneva in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match under the lights.
 
The host Golden Tornadoes scored two goals in each half, before adding one final insurance marker in the final two minutes of play, to earn the home win.
 
Geneva out-shot Saint Vincent 24-9 on the evening, with 12 shots on goal.
 
The Golden Tornadoes' Darren Main got his team off to a strong start, scoring goals in the 19th and 23rd minutes to stake his squad to an early 2-0 lead.
 
The game would then turn into a physical battle after Main's second strike, with the teams combining for 10 fouls and just two shots over the final 20 minutes of the opening frame. Geneva would enter the break holding an 8-6 advantage in shots.
 
Geneva seized control coming out of the break, racking seven shots over the first nine minutes of the second frame, with SVC keeper Shane Piper making three saves over the span.
 
As was the case in the opening half, the Golden Tornadoes with would then score a pair of goals in quick succession, with Kyle Lapoure scoring in the 51st minute to make it 3-0, and Antonio Fiordilino in the 55th to up the lead to 4-0.
 
Mateos Carrion got the Bearcats on the board with just over eight minutes left in regulation, blasting a shot inside the upper left 90 from 25 yards out, but the Golden Tornadoes closed out the day's scoring with 33 seconds left to account for the final score.
 
David Rahaman and Michael Gates each had two shots apiece to lead the Bearcats, while Piper ended the evening with seven saves in goal.
 
The Bearcats will now return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 20, when they close out their 2021 home schedule with a 3 p.m. match against PAC foe Geneva at UPMC Field.
