Women's soccer drops season finale at Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. (Oct. 27): Host Grove City scored a pair of second half goals to pull away for a 3-1 win over the Bearcats in their 2021 season finale.

Playing in her final career game, Saint Vincent senior Lauren May scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Tanisha Grewal and Jessica Persin, to cut the SVC deficit to 2-1 five minutes into the second half. Just over 15 minutes later, however, the Wolverines added an insurance marker, and SVC was unable to comeback.

Play was even throughout the majority of the first half, with the majority of the action taking place in the middle third of the field. The Wolverines scored the half's only goal 20 minutes into play on a strike from Hailey Weinert. Over the first 45 minutes, the two teams combined for just 6 shots, with the Wolverines holding a slim 4-2 advantage.

The Wolverines struck quickly coming out of halftime, with Rachel Sullivan scoring off through traffic off of a corner kick two minutes into play.

Just three minutes later, May caught up to a through ball after a pair of quick passes from Grewal and Persin and beat the keeper one-on-one to make it 2-1 with 39:21 left in regulation.

The Wolverines would then up their offensive pressure and in the 58th minute, SVC keeper Kendall Castor made a sprawling save to cut off a breakaway and keep it a one-goal game.

On the Bearcats' ensuing possession, they would advance deep into Grove City territory, but a blast from 20 yards out by Hannah Irvine was stopped with a leaping save by the Wolverines' Courtney Lisman.

Grove City would add an insurance marker with just over 22 minutes left in the half on Weinert's second goal of the afternoon.

The Bearcats would have a number of sustained possessions over the final stages of the second half, but the Grove City defense kept them at bay, preventing SVC from cutting into the lead.

Castor ended the afternoon with five saves for the Bearcats, while Grewal totaled a team-best three shots and Irvine two. After out-shooting SVC 9-6 over the second half, the Wolverines ended the game with a 13-8 margin.

Saint Vincent closes the season with a 5-11 record overall and a 2-7 mark in PAC play, while Grove City improved to 10-7 overall and 7-2 in the conference.
