The Saint Vincent College softball team honored its three seniors before facing the Bethany Bison. The Bearcats swept the Bison 5-2 and 11-9.
Game 1 - Saint Vincent 5, Bethany 2
Bethany opened the first game with a single through the left side to score a run to take a 1-0 lead. Saint Vincent wasted no time responding after a lead off double from
Shae Robson. With two outs,
Mallory Halleck drove in Robson with a single that found its way into right field to tie the game at one.
A scoreless second for the Bison gave SVC a chance to take its first lead of the game.
Jessica Persin gave the Bearcats a 2-1 edge with a leadoff home run over the left field fence. Bethany answered in their half of the third to event the game at two.
Saint Vincent regained the lead as
Abbey Ginter singled up the middle as Robson scored her second run of the game. A scoreless fourth for both teams and a scoreless top of the fifth for the Bison set the Bearcats to add to their lead.
After two singles to place runners on first and third,
Kaylee Ludwick hit a sacrifice fly to center field allowing
Olivia Persin to tag from third. SVC now lead by two (4-2). In the sixth, Robson drove in a run of her own with a triple down the left field line to as
Mary Maceda scored from first.
Haley Bicko allowed only a single in the top of the seventh but completed the game for the win. Bicko pitched all seven innings, giving up two runs on eight hits and a strikeout.
Robson and Halleck both collected three hits as Robson scored twice and drove in another run.
Game 2 - Saint Vincent 11, Bethany 9
Game two began similarly to the first with Bethany scoring the first two runs. In the bottom of the inning,
Kelsey Tobin drove a ball into left center as Ginter and
Olivia Persin scored to even the game at two. SVC took over in the second as it scored four runs on three hits and a Bison error to claim a 6-2 lead.
The lead was short lived as the Bison responded with a big inning of their own. The visitors scored five runs on three hits and a Bearcat mistake to take a slight lead. The Bearcats claimed the lead in the bottom of the third off a Ginter double to right center as
Olivia Persin and Robson crossed the plate to take an 8-7 lead.
The back and forth game continued as Bethany tied the game in the top of the eighth but Saint Vincent answered as
Riley Assalone singled through the right side as
Jessica Persin scored.
Hanna Pavsek followed up with a ground out to score
Johnna Karas as SVC led 10-8.
In the bottom of the fifth, Karas singled to center field as
Mackenzie Larimer scored. The Bison added another run in the sixth but the Bearcats held on for the 11-9 win.
Jessica Persin led the team going 3-for-4 from the plate. Four other Bearcats collected two hits, Tobin drove in three runs while
Olivia Persin had two RBI and scored three times.
Jessica LaPorte went the distance for SVC, giving up nine runs (two earned) on seven hits and two strikeouts.
Saint Vincent (4-7-1) hosts Thiel College on Monday, March 29 for a doubleheader. First pitch is at 3:30 p.m.
