Seniors power Bearcats past Yellow Jackets

The Saint Vincent College football team hosted the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets in a Presidents' Athletic Conference matchup at Chuck Noll Field.. The Bearcats defeated Waynesburg by a score of 56-26 on senior day.

It was a slow start to the day for both teams, as both teams could not get anything going offensively. The first two drives for the Bearcats ended in a bad snap on a punt and a three-and-out. The Yellow Jackets first two drives ended in a missed field goal and a punt.

Saint Vincent turned it around on their third possession of the game. The Bearcats used a flea flicker to score their first touchdown of the game. Quarterback Brady Walker handed it off to Jeremy Wodarek, who pitched it to Andre Dixon. Dixon then pitched it back to Walker who found Keith Kalp running down the middle of the field for a 53-yard touchdown with a successful point after attempt, getting SVC on the board (7-0).

The Yellow Jackets got on the board on their next possession as well. They drove to the ten-yard line, but the Bearcats defense held strong, forcing Waynesburg to kick a field goal. The 27-yard field goal by Keegan Raabe split the uprights, making the score 7-3 in favor of Saint Vincent, and that would be the score heading to the second quarter.

On the ensuing Bearcats drive it was the Mike Stasko show. Saint Vincent moved the ball down to the Waynesburg 20-yard line. On second down, Walker handed the ball off to Stasko and he rushed it for a gain of 15 yard, breaking the all-time modern-era rushing record at Saint Vincent College.

On first and goal they gave it back to Stasko, rushing it over the right end for a five-yard score. A successful extra point put SVC ahead by11 (14-3).

Waynesburg went three-and-out on its next possession and punted the ball back to Saint Vincent. It took the Bearcats just two plays to add another touchdown to the board. Walker found Wodarek, for a 75-yard touchdown pass, making the score 21-3.

On the second play of Waynesburg's next drive, freshman linebacker Nathan Sullivan picked off the Yellow Jackets quarterback Tyler Raines, putting the Bearcats in business at the Waynesburg 24.

SVC used just three plays to score another touchdown. Walker found Wodarek once again for his second receiving touchdown of the game, as the score moved to 28-3.

The Saint Vincent defense continued to impress, as Waynesburg went three-and-out once again on the following possession, as it was forced to punt.

The Bearcats used a three-play drive in 1:17 to find the end zone. Walker threw yet another touchdown, this time finding Phil Harding for a 20-yard score, increasing the lead to 35-3.

Waynesburg answered back before the half as the Yellow Jackets used up 5:11 on a 12 play, 75-yard drive. The drive ended as Raines found Jahmiq Johnson for a 21-yard touchdown. Saint Vincent held a 35-10 edge going to the half.

The Yellow Jackets started the half with the ball. They had a sustaining drive and were set up with a first-and-goal on the Saint Vincent eight-yard line. The Bearcats defense, came up with another stand as Andrew Deaton tackled Waynesburg running back Justin Flack, forcing a turnover on downs.

The Bearcats once again scored very quickly. Stasko added to his career day, as on the second play of the drive he ran 81 yards for the Saint Vincent touchdown, making the lead 42-10.

Waynesburg got the ball back and used 13 plays to go 85 yards in 7:48. As the Yellow Jackets were closing in on the end zone, Ibrahim Saunders punched the ball out from Johnson as the ball went through the end zone, forcing a touchback and giving the ball back to SVC to start the fourth quarter.

On the SVC drive, Walker hit Wodarek for what would have been his third receiving touchdown of the game, but it was called back due to an illegal man downfield penalty. A couple plays after a timeout, the Bearcats used another trick play. Walker found Kalp who lateraled the ball to offensive lineman Colton Belmont. Belmont found pay dirt for his first touchdown of his collegiate career, increasing the Saint Vincent lead to 39 (49-10).

The Yellow Jackets found the end zone on its ensuing drive as they went 59 yards in three plays but still trailed by 32 (49-17).

The Bearcats offense continued to click as they answered right back with a touchdown of their own. Julian Howard kicked it into gear and ran 51-yards for another Saint Vincent touchdown, making the lead 56-17.

Waynesburg responded right back after they got the ball. After a solid kickoff return, the Yellow Jackets were in SVC territory. A few chunk plays got them down inside the 15-yard line. On second and ten at the SVC 13, Flack ran it in from 13 yards out, making the lead 56-24.

The final score of the game came after Waynesburg decided to punt the ball with their quarterback and downed the ball inside the one-yard line. On the ensuing play, the Yellow Jacket defense swarmed SVC running back Evan Walsh forcing a safety, making the score 56-26.

Stasko led the Bearcats in rushing, as he had 12 carries for 121 yards, including two touchdowns. Walker was 14-16 (87.5%) for 329 yards and threw for five touchdowns. Walker's completion percentage was one-percent from tying Aaron Smetanka's record of 88.5. Kalp had three catches for 103 yards with a touchdown. Woodarek had two catches for 92 yards, both of which resulted in touchdowns.

The Bearcats will wrap the season up on the road as they travel to play Carnegie Mellon University on Friday, April 23. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
