Softball falls to Presidents


The Saint Vincent College softball team traveled to Washington & Jefferson College for a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader. The Bearcats were swept by the Presidents 10-9 and 6-5 in eight innings in game two.

Game 1 - W&J 10, SVC 9

In the first inning, Washington & Jefferson opened the scoring with a RBI single and a RBI double to take a 2-0 edge. Saint Vincent cut deficit in half in the second as Johnna Karas singled to right to score Mallory Halleck. 

The Bearcats added to its total in the third as Kelsey Tobin singled with the bases loaded to score two to take a 3-2 lead. Monica Gourley singled later in the inning as Tobin scored before Kaylee Ludwick scored on a single from Karas. Saint Vincent led 5-2 going to the bottom half of the third. 

The Presidents responded with a run in the third but still trailed by two (5-3). Both teams were scoreless in the fourth but the fifth would be a different story.

Saint Vincent opened the scoring as Mackenzie Larimer crossed home plate by way of a Gourley ground out. Karas batted in two more runs witha double to right center to plate Ludwick and Tobin. 

Trailing 8-3, W&J scored three runs on three hits to pull within two, 8-6. In the sixth, Jessica Persin homered to left center lead off the inning but the Presidents added two more runs in the bottom half of the frame. 

Up by one (9-8), the Bearcats looked to add to their lead but failed with a runner in scoring position. In the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded, W&J looked to walk it off.

A single to left field tied the game before a President was hit by a pitch to score the winning run, ending the game 10-9.

Karas led the team, going 3-for-3 from the plate with four runs batted in. Haley Bicko pitched all six innings, allowing 10 runs on 13 hits in the loss.

Game 2 - W&J 6, SVC 5 (8 Inn.)

Saint Vincent opened the scoring in game two as Abbey Ginter doubled to score Tobin. Washington & Jefferson responded in the bottom of the first with a lead off homer.

The Presidents added another run in the bottom of the second with a single to lead 2-1. The score remained this way until the fifth inning.

In the top half of the fifth, Halleck doubled to score Ginter. Taylor LaVale followed with a single to score pinch runner Larimer to take a 3-2 lead.

The lead was short lived was W&J scored three runs on three hits to regain a two-run edge (5-3).

In the sixth, Alexandra Dillner singled to score Karas before Jessica LaPorte sat the Presidents down in order.

Trailing 5-4 with one out in the seventh, Shae Robson tripled to score LaVale to tie game at five.

With runners on first and third with two outs, LaPorte forced a ground ball to send the game to extra innings. 

Saint Vincent had a the bases loaded with one out in the eighth but were unable to capitalize. In the bottom half of the inning, the Presidents got a walkoff single with two outs to take the game, 6-5.

Ginter went 3-for-4 with a RBI and a run while Tobin and Robson collected two hits in the game. Jessica LaPorte threw seven and two-thirds innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on 12 hits.

Saint Vincent (9-14-1, 3-7) returns home for its final home doubleheader of the season against Waynesburg University on Tuesday, April 20. Game one starts at 3:30 p.m.
