Bearcat men fall to McDaniel

LATROBE, PA - Visiting McDaniel College used two second half goals to defeat Saint Vincent 2-0 in a non-conference tilt at UPMC Field.

After a scoreless first half, the Green Terror (2-3) scored the game's first goal in the 51st minute, when Nick Starr banged home a rebound on the doorstep. McDaniel continued to press offensively and added onto its lead with just over six minutes remaining in regulation, when Starr scored his second of the game, through traffic in front, to make it 2-0.

The game was a defensive battle in the first half, with SVC continually thwarting McDaniel's pressure in front. McDaniel looked primed to score the game's first goal with just under 10 minutes left in the opening half, but Bearcat keeper Shane Piper ranged far out of his cage to cut off a McDaniel breakaway and make a sprawling save. Piper ended the half with three saves, while the Bearcats managed two shots on target, one apiece from Jose Hurtado and Joel Quiroz Mansilla.

Saint Vincent looked to grab the momentum coming out of halftime, being granted a corner kick just 45 seconds into play that resulted into two quick shots. Neither would find the cage, though, and McDaniel countered, quickly upping its offensive pressure. The attack paid off six minutes into the half. Piper made another point-blank save, but the rebound deflected out front right to Starr, who directed it home to make it 1-0.

Four minutes after McDaniel's strike, SVC held another lengthy possession which resulted in a pair of corners, but again, two shot attempts went high. From there, the Green Terror took control, and despite five more saves from Piper, the visitors put the game away with 6:26 left to play on Starr's second goal of the game, assisted by Allan Rivera-Benitez.

For the game, McDaniel out-shot Saint Vincent 27-8, including a 17-5 margin in the second half, while the Green Terror also held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Piper turned in a strong effort in the cage, finishing with a season-high eight saves, many from close range and in traffic.

Hurtado and Griffin Prinkey led Saint Vincent with two shots apiece, while Quiroz Mansilla, Cory NorthrupDavid Rahaman and Jesse Detweiler each took one attempt.

The Bearcats will now look to snap their two-game losing skid when they return to action at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 23, at Wilson College in Chambersburg. The match was originally scheduled for Sept. 1, but was postponed due to torrential rain.
