Bearcats topped by UPG in home-opener

LATROBE, PA - Visiting Pitt-Greensburg used an early second half barrage to come back from a one-goal deficit and defeat Saint Vincent 3-1 on a sun-splashed afternoon on the UPMC Field Turf.

After a solid first half effort by the Bearcats (0-2), Pitt-Greensburg (4-0) received all of its offense in the opening minutes of the second half, scoring three times in a six-minute span. They would then hold off the Bearcats over the final 40 minutes of play to improve to 4-0 on the season.

The Bearcats thwarted a few UPG scoring chances in the opening minutes of regulation, before Tanisha Grewal put the hosts on the board first, when she caught up to a Lauren May through ball, streaked through the middle of the box and buried the shot to make it 1-0 in the 11th minute. It was Grewal's second goal of the season, after she similarly scored in the opening minutes of SVC's season-opener at Alfred State three days prior.

Pitt-Greensburg, which entered the game having out-scored its previous three opponents on the year by a combined 17-1, tried to counter throughout the first half, but were kept at bay by the Bearcats. UPG took seven first half corner kicks and 12 shots, but were kept off the scoreboard. Madison Arnold made three first half saves, while the SVC defense forced a number of Bobcat shots to go off target. Saint Vincent also had its share of scoring chances over the latter stages of the opening half, but UPG keeper Paige John made three saves to keep the deficit at one.

The Bobcats surged out of the intermission, with Ashley Lucas breaking through the defense to score the game-tying goal 68 seconds into half. Just over a minute later, the Bobcats' Ashley Lucas scored on an odd-angle shot from the corner of the box to make it 2-1, before Lucas upped the UPG advantage to 3-1 on a free kick in the 50th minute.

Though they would match the Bobcats in possession time over the final 35 minutes of play, the Bearcats were unable to cut into the deficit. Meanwhile, SVC keeper Maggie Perkins made four second half saves to keep the margin at two.

Grewal led SVC with four shots on the afternoon, including three on goal. Madison Arnold started in goal for SVC, blanking the Bobcats with five saves over the first half, before giving way to Perkins, who played the final 45 minutes.

The Bearcats will return to action on Thursday, Sept. 9, traveling to Chambersburg to take on Wilson College in a 4 p.m. non-conference matchup. The game was originally scheduled for Sept. 1, but was postponed due to torrential rains.
