Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Bearcats top Pioneers, improve to 3-1

LATROBE, Pa. (Sept. 11) – The Saint Vincent women's soccer team used a dominating second half to defeat Alfred State 2-0 in non-conference action at UPMC Field.

Tanisha Grewal scored both goals for the Bearcats (3-1), while the SVC defense surrendered just six Alfred State (1-2) shots, with Madison Arnold earning the clean sheet in goal.

The Bearcats had the possession advantage in the first half, but the two teams combined for just five shots.

Saint Vincent would then storm out of the gates following the intermission. Less than a minute into the half, Jessica Persin sent a blast in from 15 yards out that went just wide right. Forty seconds later, Grewal had a point-blank blast saved, while Persin's rebound attempt was also gobbled up by Alfred State keeper Giana DeMora.

In the 52nd minute, SVC finally found the scoreboard, with Grewal scoring out of a scrum in front of the net, with the assist credited to Jude Galvin.

After the early second half barrage, play would even out, with much of the action taking place in the middle third of the field. The Pioneers had two corner kicks and two shots between the 65th and 74th minute, but the SVC defense kept them off the board.

With just over 15 minutes remaining in regulation, Saint Vincent got the insurance tally when Grewal scored off of a bomb from 35 yards out, smashing it perfectly into the upper 90, to make it a 2-0 game.

The Bearcats would then keep the Pioneers at bay over the final stages of the game to earn their second straight home victory.

Arnold earned the win in goal, making two saves in the shutout.

The Bearcats will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 14, when they close out their five-game homestand with a 1 p.m.non-conference matchup against Penn State-Altoona at UPMC Field.
