LATROBE, Pa. (Sept. 7) – The Saint Vincent women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2022 campaign, dropping a 3-0 decision to visiting Pitt-Greensburg on the UPMC Field turf.
The Bearcats drop to 1-1 overall on the young season, while the Bobcats move to 2-1.
After an evenly played opening 30 minutes, the Bobcats broke open the scoring in the 36th minute, when Megan Hickey picked up a loose ball off of a rebound in front to make it 1-0. Less than two minutes, Hickey looked poised to add onto the lead, but Bearcat goalkeeper
Madison Arnold stopped her on a breakaway attempt to keep the deficit at one goal heading into the intermission.
UPG upped its offensive pressure coming out of the break, as they took five shots and four corner kicks over the first 15 minutes of the second stanza. After Arnold made three saves over the span to keep the score at 1-0, the Bobcats netted an insurance tally with 13:07 left in regulation, when Maya Wertelet scored off of the rebound of a Alexsia Barlamas shot off the pipe.
The Bobcats closed the scoring with just 20 seconds left to play, with Barlamas chipping in a shot from the short side to make it 3-0.
Arnold played all 45 minutes in goal and finished with eight saves, as UPG finished with a 21-2 margin in the shot column.
The Bearcats will now have a quick turnaround, as they will continue their season-opening five-game homestand with a 3 p.m. matchup against Pitt-Bradford on the UPMC Field turf.
