Big comeback lifts SVC to fifth place finish

A strong mid-day comeback lifted the Saint Vincent men's bowling team to a fifth place finish among 18 teams in an Ohio Bowling Conference event in Columbus.

After a weak start left the Bearcats in 17th place after the first three games, SVC fought back in the fourth traditional game and set a school record.  Michael Fekete led the way with a 256, while Garrett Contee and James Gatto each finished at 225.  Brandon Dunmire added a 220, while Alex Vickers shot a 211 game, giving SVC a modern day record single-game total of 1137.  The game jumped the Bearcats up to 12th in the standings.

In game five, SVC scored 1077, with all five bowlers once again surpassing the 200 mark.  Gatto (230) had the top score, followed by Fekete (225), Contee (214), Vickers (207) and Dunmire (201).  Saint Vincent moved to 10th following that game.

Up next were three sets of 4-game Baker team blocks, and SVC started out by setting another modern day school record.  Opening with games of 279 and 257, SVC finished with a four-game total of 948 and shot to sixth in the overall standings.  The team finished the day with four-game blocks of 792 and 815, for a 12-game average of 212.9.

Individually, Fekete led all SVC bowlers with a five-game traditional total of 1161, an average of 212.6, which put him in 16th place out of 183 competitors.  Contee was 30th, averaging 196.8.

In Baker play, all five SVC bowlers topped the 200 mark in average, led by Contee at 224.7, followed by Dunmire (219.5), Gatto (207.8), Fekete (204.7) and Vickers (201.3).

The University of Northern Ohio won the team title for the day, followed by Robert Morris University and Ohio State University.  Muskingum University and SVC rounded out the top five.

SVC will head to Canton, Michigan next weekend for two American Heartland tournaments, with separate events on Saturday and Sunday.
