Bearcats Stymied by Slow Start in 2023 Season Finale

LATROBE, Pa. (Oct. 25)- The Saint Vincent men's soccer team was stymied by a slow start, falling to Chatham 3-0 in the Bearcats 2023 season finale.

Two of the three Chatham goals were scored in the opening three minutes of the contest.

Despite the lopsided score, shots were fairly even with the visiting Cougars holding a slight 14-13 advantage. Shots on goal were 7-2 in favor of the Cougars.

Andres Mateos Carrion and Eduardo Richa were the lone Bearcats to record a shot on goal in the loss. Mattia Speretta recorded three shots coming off the bench and Jose Hurtado tallied two shots as well. Antonio Mendes, Ethan Bridges, Wilmer Rivera, and Kelvin Aguilar-Contreras all recorded one shot in the loss as well.

The Cougars came out of the gate on the attack offensively as just 2:14 into the game, Luke Matzelle scored his second goal of the season on an assist from Sam Schoensee to give the visitors the early 1-0 lead.

Chatham doubled their lead less than a minute later as Azavier Coppin scored his 13th of the season, increasing the Chatham lead to 2-0. The Bearcats settled down and gained some control of the ball offensively but were unable to score as the game went into the half still at 2-0 in favor of the Cougars.

In the second half, it was much of the same story, as the Cougars scored just four minutes into the half. Anthony Holter scored his fourth of the season to give Chatham a 3-0 advantage. For the majority of the half, each team was able to generate scoring opportunities but neither cashed in as the Bearcats fell in their season finale.

Kameron Rock took the loss in net, allowing three goals, while also recording four saves for the Bearcats. There was a total of six corner kicks in the game, with each team recording three each. Saint Vincent totaled 21 fouls compared to ten by the Cougars.

Prior to the game the Bearcats honored their six seniors, Jose Hurtado, Andres Mateos Carrion, Brandyn Brock, Benjamin Edwards, David Rahaman, and student manager Bryce Edmiston.

Saint Vincent concludes their 2023 campaign with a 6-10-2 record overall and 2-6-2 record in the President's Athletic Conference.
