Balanced attack propels Bearcats to win on senior day

LATROBE, Pa. (Apr. 23)- The Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team defeated La Roche 17-7 on senior day, securing their tenth win of the season.
 
13 different Bearcats tallied at least one point, including 12 different players who scored goals for Saint Vincent.
 
Melanie Seefeldt recorded a game-high four points for Saint Vincent, scoring one goal while dishing out three assists as well. Gabby Salandro (three goals), Maggie Edwards (two goals, one assist), and Rachel Thatcher (one goal, two assists) all tallied three points for SVC.
 
Kaylee Bandow (two goals), Luciana Polk (two goals), and Bridget Doyle (one goal, one assist), all added two points for Saint Vincent as well. Caroline Mullineaux, Georgie Volna, Cara Luallen, Jessica Persin, and Hannah-Marie Starner all scored one goal as well for the Bearcats.
 
Carolina Walters added one assist on a goal in the win for Saint Vincent as well. Bailey Nicely picked up the win in net for SVC, making seven saves, while allowing seven goals.
 
Seefeldt totaled a game-high six ground balls and Edwards also recorded four ground balls as well. Defensively, Addy Carbaugh recorded two caused turnovers as did Kloe Templeton.
 
As a team SVC combined for 42 shots, compared to just 13 total shots from the Red Hawks. The Bearcats also forced 25 turnovers by La Roche as well. SVC was a strong 16-21 on clear attempts, while they limited La Roche to just 11-23.
 
The Bearcats also won 18 draw controls, compared to ten wins by the Red Hawks. Saint Vincent also totaled six free position shots, where La Roche had just two throughout the entirety of the contest.
 
After a low scoring first quarter, the Bearcats held a comfortable 3-1 lead. Saint Vincent increased their lead to 9-3 by the halftime break after scoring five more in the second quarter.
 
The Bearcats really opened the game up in the second half. SVC outscored La Roche 4-2 in the third quarter to increase the lead to 13-5 by the end of the quarter.
 
In the final quarter, the mercy rule clock came into effect as the Bearcats went up by ten goals after goals from Persin and Starner scored goals to go up 15-5. Both Persin's and Starner's goals to open up the fourth quarter were assisted by Rachel Thatcher.
 
The Bearcats and Red Hawks both scored two goals to close out the final 13-minutes of play to give the Bearcats the big 17-7 win on senior day.
 
The Bearcats conclude their home schedule on Tuesday, April 25, when they play host to Franciscan at UPMC Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. in Latrobe.
