Men's soccer pulls past Penn State-Altoona for 3-1 win

ALTOONA, Pa. (Sept. 5)- Saint Vincent used a balanced attack as three different players scored goals in the Bearcats 3-1 win on the road against Penn State Altoona.

SVC scored an early goal ten minutes in the half, following that up with a goal early in the second half, and adding an insurance goal to seal the deal with just over three minutes remaining in the match.

Oziel Bonola-Soriano, Jose Hurtado, and Mattia Speretta were the trio of goal scorers for Saint Vincent. Bonola-Soriano's goal was the first of his career, coming on an assist from Cade Coldiron.

Hurtado's goal about 15-minutes into the second half came on an assist from Antonio Mendes and Speretta followed with a late second half goal on a penalty kick.

It was a quick start for the Bearcats offensively as they controlled the ball in their offensive end for the majority of the first ten minutes. That's when Bonola-Soriano dribbled the ball to the middle of the box on a pass from Coldiron, beating the keeper to his left from ten yards out to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead.

The Bearcats momentum continued as they controlled for the rest of the half, having a couple more scoring opportunities but did not find the back of the net. They also held the Lions offense in check as goalie, Chrystiaan Sexton shut the Lions out in the half.

In the first half, SVC outshot Altoona 5-2, while also tallying one corner kick, limiting the Lions to zero corner kicks on their end. The lions committed nine fouls in the first half, compared to six by Saint Vincent.

It was a similar attack for the Bearcats to begin the second half. After holding the ball in their offensive end, Hurtado scored his goal in the 60th minute. Hurtado took a pass in the left side of the box and fired a shot past the keeper into the bottom right corner from about 12 yards out to increase the SVC lead to 2-0.

Penn State-Altoona answered just over 12-minutes later, ending the shutout for Sexton. Ethan Firth scored his first of the year for the Lions on an assist from Owen Myers. Hirth took a long free kick that came into the box and headed past the keeper into the left side of the goal to cut the Saint Vincent lead in half at 2-1.

The scoring went quiet for the next several minutes as the game remained a one goal game until the 86th minute when Speretta put the finishing touches on the win for SVC with his second goal of the season. After being awarded a penalty kick, Speretta beat the goaltender to his right to give SVC a 3-1 lead.

The Bearcats held off the Lions over the remaining three minutes and change to secure the 3-1 victory for their second road win of the season, moving the Bearcats to 2-1 overall in non-conference play.

Over the course of the match, SVC outshot the Lions 15-10, including 11 shots on goal, compared to just two on goal by Penn State-Altoona. Saint Vincent compiled five corner kicks, four of them coming in the second half, while limiting the Lions to zero.

Nine yellow cards and one red card were handed out between the two teams as the Lions committed 17 fouls, while SVC committed 15 over the course of the game.

The Bearcats return to action on Saturday, September 9, when they play host to Mount Aloysius in a non-conference matchup. The match is scheduled to begin at 12 noon at UPMC Field in Latrobe on Saturday.
