LATROBE, Pa. (March 24) – The Saint Vincent College women's lacrosse team celebrated its Senior Day in style, defeating visiting Ursuline College 22-4 in a non-conference matchup at a chilly UPMC Field.
Seven different players scored at least one goal for the Bearcats, who outshot the Arrows 30-11 and forced 26 Ursuline turnovers.
Bailey Nicely registered nine points, on eight goals and one assist, to pace the Saint Vincent offense.
Carolina Walters totaled seven points, on five goals and two helpers, while
Gabby Salandro had six points, scoring four goals and dishing two assists.
Two Bearcats recorded five-point days, with
Lena Coyne scoring two goals with three assists, and
Madison Weber one goal with four helpers, while
Bethany Smith and
Valeria Hurtado each scored one goal.
After being recognized with pregame Senior Day festivities, Saint Vincent goalie
Kyra Lipetzky played all 60 minutes in the cage and recorded four saves to earn the win, while also corralling two ground balls.
Salandro and
Brianna Mack paced the SVC defense with three caused turnovers apiece, while Salandro and Weber tied for the team lead with four ground balls.
Walters led both sides with 10 draw controls, and Weber controlled three.
Nicely opened the game's scoring just 51 seconds into play with an unassisted goal, before the Arrows tied it less than three minutes later on a goal by Grace Darone. From there, the Bearcats took control, scoring nine unanswered goals over the next eight minutes to take a 10-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. Walters and Nicely each scored four goals in the opening frame, with Salandro and Smith adding tallies.
Saint Vincent continued to roll in the second quarter, outscoring Ursuline 4-0, with two goals from Salandro, and one apiece from Coyne and Weber, to take a 14-1 halftime lead.
The two teams traded goals in the third quarter, with Nicely scoring twice and Coyne once, before the Bearcats closed the game by scoring five unanswered goals in the fourth quarter, with two from Nicely and one apiece from Hurtado, Walters and Salandro, to close out the win.
Along with the sizeable margins in shots and turnovers, Saint Vincent was 15-for-16 in clearing attempts to Ursuline's 11-for-19 mark, while SVC held a 26-17 advantage in ground balls.
The Bearcats will now shift their attention to Presidents' Athletic Conference play, opening up the league slate on Wednesday, March 27, with a 4 p.m. bout at Franciscan University in a rematch of last year's PAC Quarterfinals.
