Football opens 2024 campaign at W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. (Sept. 7) – The Saint Vincent College football team dropped its 2024 season-opener on the road to a strong Washington & Jefferson squad.
 
The host Presidents (1-0, 1-0 Presidents' Athletic Conference) got off to a hot start, scoring two touchdowns in the opening four minutes, and never looked back, topping the Bearcats (0-1, 0-1 PAC), 59-6.
 
W&J outgained Saint Vincent 578-173 in total offense on the afternoon, spearheaded by a strong passing attack that amassed 374 yards and four touchdowns.
 
Julian Walker, who produced a team-leading 55 rushing yards on just six carries, scored the lone Saint Vincent touchdown of the day with a 40-yard dash in the fourth quarter.
 
Walker's 55 yards led a Saint Vincent ground game that produced 134 yards, with Dontae Sanders gaining 38 yards on 10 tries, and Billy Beck 20 yards on eight totes.
 
SVC quarterback Israel Reed completed four passes for 39 yards, with Wayne Corbin Jr. hauling in the longest Reed pass of the day with a 20-yard reception.
 
Defensively, KeShawn Davis and Wiley Purry each made 11 tackles, with Purry forcing a fumble and recording 1.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Robbie Labuda produced nine tackles, while freshmen David Simouang, Fred Woodfork and David Compton all recording one tackle for loss.
 
Quarterback Jacob Pugh paced the W&J offense, completing 18 of 24 passes for 362 yards and four touchdowns, while also rushing for two scores. W&J's Jacob Macosko made 10 receptions for 158 yards and two TDs, with teammate Owen Petrisek gaining a game-high 60 rushing yards on 10 tries.
 
Saint Vincent will be back on the road for its week two game, traveling to northwestern Pennsylvania to face Allegheny College at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14.
