GREENSBURG, Pa. (March 21)- The Saint Vincent softball team split a doubleheader against cross town rival Pitt-Greensburg on Friday afternoon.
In two run-rule shortened contests, the Bearcats (10-6) fell in the opener 13-1, before earning an impressive 24-1 victory in game two to earn the non-conference split.
Game 1- Pitt-Greensburg 13, Saint Vincent 1 (5 Innings)
It was all Bobcats in the opener of the doubleheader as UPG scored 12 of their 13 runs in the first two innings, while Saint Vincent was limited to just four hits in the loss.
Josey Michalski totaled two of SVC's four hits, while
Eva Farone and
Shayna Perigo both picked up one hit each.
Lily Koller picked up Saint Vincent's lone RBI in the loss on a sacrifice fly.
After Saint Vincent went down without a run in the top of the first, UPG responded with a nine run inning in the bottom of the opening frame, quickly jumping out to a 9-0 lead. They added three more in the bottom of the second to increase their lead to 12-0.
The Bearcats scored their lone run of the game in the third on Koller's, RBI sac-fly that scored Farone. UPG added another run in the fourth before shutting Saint Vincent down in the fifth as the Bearcats fell in the run-rule shortened game.
Saint Vincent scored their lone run on just four hits, committing three errors, while the Bobcats scored their 13 runs on ten hits, committing two errors.
Game 2- Saint Vincent 24, Pitt-Greensburg 1 (5 Innings)
It was a complete flip of the script in the second game of the doubleheader. Saint Vincent quickly jumped out to a 5-0 lead after a five run first inning, before completely breaking the game open with a 17-run second inning. The Bearcats added two more runs in the third, before holding UPG scoreless to split the doubleheader with another run-rule shortened finish.
The Bearcats 24 runs are the most runs they've scored in a single game since scoring 36 runs in a game against Penn State-Fayette in 2015.Â
Saint Vincent also totaled an impressive 25 hits in the mercy rule victory as well.
Nine SVC batters recorded two or more hits, including three of which that totaled three hits.
Josey Michalski and
Haley Hamilton led the way going 3-3 with four RBI's and three runs scored each.
Taylor Williams also had three hits, while driving in three runners and scoring two runs as well. One of Williams three hits was a homerun.
At the top of the lineup,
Mackenzie Favero went 2-3 with three runs scored and an RBI, while
Lily Rush went 2-3 as well with two RBI's and one run scored.
Lily Koller went 2-3 with two runs scored and
Shayna Perigo added two hits and four RBI's as well.
Dakota Hershberger added two hits and three RBI's, while
Anita Szymoniak went 2-4 with two RBI's.
Eva Farone,
A.J. Arnal,
Olivia Goodwin, and
April Earnest all totaled one hit each for SVC in the win as well.
Meghan Braun added to her great start to the season with another strong outing in the circle. The senior picked up the win, moving her record to 5-1 after tossing three innings, giving up just one earned run on three hits.
Madi Zigarovich pitched two scoreless innings as well, allowing three hits, while striking out three and walking one batter as well.
Saint Vincent started the game out strong with five runs on five hits in the opening inning. Michalski and Perigo both had RBI;s, before Hamilton ripped a three-run homer to put the Bearcats up 5-0. SVC's offensive outburst took place in the second inning, when they scored an impressive 17 runs on 15 hits in the inning to take a 22-0 lead.
The Bearcats added two more runs in the third, before shutting down the Bobcats to earn the 24-1 victory and doubleheader split.
SVC will return to action on Monday, March 24 with their home opening doubleheader against Carlow. First pitch in game one is scheduled for 3 p.m.
