Softball sweeps second straight doubleheader to conclude Florida trip on four game win streak

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (March 5)- The Saint Vincent softball team won their second consecutive doubleheader, defeating North Central (Minn.) and Wentworth Institute of Technology.

The Bearcats (4-4) took down North Central (Minn.) 11-3 in a five inning run-rule shortened game in their first game of the day. They followed that up with a 12-8 win against Wentworth to conclude their 2025 spring break games in Florida.

Game 1- Saint Vincent 11, North Central (Minn.) 3 (5 Innings)

It was a big six-run second inning that helped the Bearcats win their first game of the day. Saint Vincent trailed 1-0 after a half inning of play, before scoring two in the bottom of the first, six in the second, and three in the fourth inning to earn the run-rule victory against North Central.

Lily Koller had a big game at the plate for SVC, going 3-3 with two runs scored and four RBI's. Mackenzie Favero added two hits for Saint Vincent, going 2-2 with a run scored and walk. Macie McHugh went 1-3 with a run scored, while Josey Michalski went 1-2 with two runs scored, two RBI's, and one walk.

Anita Szymoniak and Olivia Goodwin each recorded a hit and run scored too. Szymoniak also knocked in a run, while Goodwin knocked in two. Dakota Hershberger also recorded an RBI for Saint Vincent in the win as well.

Meghan Braun picked up her second win of the season in the circle. Braun pitched four innings, giving up three earned runs on six hits. She also struck out seven batters in the win. Evan Farone also pitched one inning in relief, striking out one batter in that inning.

After trailing 1-0 after a half inning, Koller ripped a two-RBI single in the bottom of the inning, scoring Michalski and McHugh to give Saint Vincent a 2-1 lead. From that point on, the Bearcats never lost the lead.

SVC struck for six runs in the second to break the game open. First, Michalski hit a two-RBI single and Koller followed with a two-RBI double to put the Bearcats up 6-1. Szymoniak then scored Koller on an RBI-single and then Hershberger eventually came around an errant throw attempting to catch Szymoniak stealing to put Saint Vincent in command with an 8-1 lead.

North Central scored two runs in the third to cut the lead to 8-3 heading into the fourth. However, the Bearcats scored three more runs in the fourth and held North Central scoreless to put the eight run rule into effect. The final SVC three runs came on an RBI-groundout from Hershberger and two-RBI double from Goodwin.

Saint Vincent scored their 11 runs on nine hits, not committing an error, while North Central scored their three runs on seven hits, committing two errors.

Game 2- Saint Vincent 12, Wentworth Insitute of Technology 8

It was all Bearcats in the second game of the day. Saint Vincent struck for a seven run first inning and added five more in the third and that was all they'd need. Wentworth outscored the Bearcats 7-0 from the third inning on, but it wasn't enough as the Bearcats two big innings led them to their fourth consecutive victory.

Three Bearcats recorded two hits in the win. At the top of the lineup, Farone went 2-4 with two runs scored and an RBI as well. Alyssa Henderson and Mackenzie Favero both went 2-4 with one run scored each. Josey Michalski added a hit and three RBI's, while Shayna Perigo totaled one hit and an RBI for Saint Vincent. Koller and Hershberger both added another hit and run scored each, while Hershberger also drove one runner in.

Madi Zigarovich picked up the win in the circle, pitching three innings, giving up five runs on seven hits, while she also struck out one and walked two batters. Olivia Bushore pitched 2.1 innings in relief, giving up three runs on seven hits. After her dominant performance in the circle yesterday, A.J. Arnal picked up the save, pitching 1.2 innings, giving up just one hit, while shutting out Wentworth.

The Saint Vincent offense didn't take long to heat up. In the top of the first, the Bearcats scored seven runs on seven hits to take full control. Michalski and Farone both recorded RBI's in the inning, while Saint Vincent also capitalized on four Wentworth errors.

Wentworth added a run in the second to cut the SVC lead to 7-1, but Saint Vincent struck for five more runs in the third. SVC added five more runs on just two hits, capitalizing on two more Wentworth errors to increase their lead to 12-1. Perigo, Michalski, and Hershberger all recorded RBI's in that third inning for Saint Vincent.

Over the final four and a half innings, Wentworth outscored Saint Vincent 7-0, but Arnal came in to close the door in the final 1.2 innings to secure the fourth consecutive win for the Bearcats.

Saint Vincent scored their 12 runs on 10 hits, not committing a single error, while Wentworth scored their eight runs on 15 hits, committing seven errors.

The Bearcats conclude their trip to Florida with a 4-4 overall record. They will return back to Pennsylvania and will take on Penn State-Fayette on the road on Thursday, March 13. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
