Latrobe, Pa. (Apr. 1) – The Saint Vincent College Softball team fell to Thiel College in a Presidents Athletic College doubleheader at home on Wednesday evening.
The Bearcats (13-13, 1-7 PAC) lost game one by a score of 6-0, and would fall short against the Tomcats by a score of 9-8 in game two.
Game 1 - Thiel 6, Saint Vincent 0
The Bearcats only registered three hits in their 6-0 loss in the opener of the doubleheader.
Eva Farone, Abby Bauer, and Mackenzie Favero recorded the three Saint Vincent hits. The team additionally struck out five times in total.
Saint Vincent managed to strike out a total of four Tomcats, with Olivia Bushore and A.J. Arnal striking out two players each. Bushore allowed five hits in three innings but allowed five runs. Arnal would pitch four innings, allowing five hits, while allowing one run.
Thiel scored five runs between innings two and three to make the game 5-0 before the bottom of the third. The Tomcats wouldn't score another run until the last inning of the game. Thiel scored six runs on 10 hits in the game.
Game 2 – Thiel 9, Saint Vincent 8
Game two of the doubleheader between Thiel and Saint Vincent was filled with nonstop scoring, as both teams scored a run in nearly every inning.
A total of 27 hits were recorded, followed by 17 Rbi's, and four home runs in the entire game. Freshman Haley Hamilton recorded three hits, three RBI's, and one home run in the game. The freshman star tried to keep Saint Vincent alive from the beginning of the game till the end.
Hamilton homered to center field in the bottom of the first to give the Bearcats a 4-2 lead, until the Tomcats retook the lead in the top of third, making the game 5-4. By the time it was the bottom of the sixth, Thiel pulled away with a 7-5 lead. Dakota Hershberger recorded a home run to tie the game in the sixth inning.
Alyssa Henderson and Josey Michalski would both hit singles to put two runners on base. Hamilton would then gift the Bearcats an 8-7 lead after recording an RBI. However, in the top of the seventh inning, Thiel would retake the lead with the score now being 9-8 and Saint Vincent would fail to score another run, thus falling to the Tomcats by a score of 9-8.
On offense, the Bearcats had a total of 16 hits, eight rbi's, two home runs, while only striking out twice. Meghan Braun recorded four strikeouts in four innings, while Madi Zigarovich registered three strikeouts in three innings.
Thiel recorded two strikeouts, but managed to score nine runs off of 11 hits.
Saint Vincent will return to action on Saturday, April 12 with a home PAC doubleheader against Franciscan University. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 2 p.m. with senior day festivities taking place prior to the game.
