LATROBE, Pa. (Apr. 22) - The Saint Vincent men's tennis team (16-4) used a 4-1 win over Washington & Jefferson (8-12) to propel themselves into the Presidents' Athletic Conference semifinals. The 16th win of the season marks a new program record for wins in a season, surpassing the 2021-22 and 2023-24 teams who each won 15 matches.
In doubles action the Presidents struck first with a 6-1 win at third doubles, but the Bearcats responded with a 6-4 win at the top spot by Braden Yokopenic and Brian Lee. Jack Citrone and Matthew Sadusky finished off doubles and secured a 1-0 lead for SVC with a 6-3 win at second doubles.
Yokopenic doubled up his victories with a 6-1, 6-4 win at the topflight of singles to give the Bearcats a 2-0 match lead. W&J narrowed the lead to 2-1 by claiming third singles. Kyle Murray put the Green and Gold on the verge of victory with a 6-4, 6-3 win at sixth singles.
With a 3-1 lead and needing just one more point to secure victory Citrone and Brady Johnson headed to third sets while Lee held a 7-6(13) lead in his match at second singles. Johnson was the first and only finisher for SVC, as he completed a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 comeback win at fourth singles to clinch the Bearcat victory.
The Green and Gold netters have now advanced to the PAC semifinals or better for the fifth year in a row, and will face Allegheny on Thursday, April 24 at 5:00PM.
